How do you keep passion burning in your writing life?
The brilliant American choreographer Martha Graham said, “Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”
The same could be said of great writers. It’s not about the mechanics, it’s about the passion! It’s about being moved by it, living with it and capturing all that delicious goodness on the page.
When you’re in the middle of a killer novel and you’re on the edge of your seat, your eyes racing through every amazing line, do you stop and think about the ‘third person limited point of view’ the writer happens to have chosen in this paragraph?
I hope not!
Certainly, technique is invaluable to great writing – an editor wouldn’t consider your work otherwise - but a story, like a dance – is the product of the passion that inspired it.
