@bestill i would suggest that, indeed, a lunatic can have a good idea: no matter the greatness or weight of the idea, a good idea is what's in question; in which case, the question really does come full circle, what is defined as good? and who ultimately defines such a thing? -- awesome seeing this conversation happening. i am glad to see everyone is remaining engagingly respectful - i just love to see dialog unfolding.

I think Jesus was a man that understood life and was trying to help people become conscious

In addition to what I said I believe He is, and for the purpose of discussion, I leave you this quote by C.S. Lewis from Mere Christianity: "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

Jesus was the basis for a movement away from the horrors of the old testament. Christians needed a figure head to base evolving morals off of since the older figures were too brutish. He probably didn't actually exist but if you need to believe in him to act good, go for it.

Who do I say Jesus is? More than four words, but 3 + 4, sorry. A reason to believe in a god. Also, in 4 words. The kingdom of God.

@erikdbennett , indeed - and i think he made plenty of statements about who he believed himself to be, of which we have recorded both in the gospels and in extrabiblical accounts. what we don't have recorded is what you (and many others) may think ;]

Limiting myself to three or four words like requested: Mythical protagonist, extremely overrated.

An amalgamation of preexisting hero myths, and one of my favorite fictional characters, right after Hiro Protagonist from Snow Crash.
