There is definitely truth. When we have a headache, it's a fact and its a truth. The problem is that the issues get so complex that it takes much effort, wisdom to see all aspects if it and to give it one particular truth label. That's why in religion the final truth determination is given to the all powerful, all seeing deity as we are limited in understanding all facets of an issue. Plus, we can't know someone else's true heart, when God does.

Of course there is a universal truth. We wouldn't exist if there wasn't. And that truth is the God of the Bible.

I'm not sure about there being an universal truth, but I know there are infinite little truths that we tell ourselves that amount to a larger truth that we believe in. I choose to believe in the oblivion that may surround us one day... that our lives now are just small observations of the larger world around us. However, that may be different for others. Not everything is subjective, there are others who believe the same things as us. However, there are also others who do not believe in what we believe. We cannot argue that our truth is the only truth, for that leads to ignorance. We must accept that there are other truths out there. There may be an universal truth, however, it cannot be simple answers such as love and kindness and respect and dignity. Those are just words that we should live by. Those are the small infinite truths of our world. I believe that if there was an universal truth. It would be more of a void-filling feeling than a word or multiple words stringed together.

What would be the fun in knowing the universal truth? It would strip life of its purpose of constantly trying to reveal mystery.

Truth does exist but it's filtered through our individual perspectives. So, truth in itself; it is what it is, regardless of what we want it to be. Through our perspectives; we can only reach approximations. You can't know in what way your perspective alters what you perceive to be true. There are just too many variables. I think it's an honorable desire to always seek truth and examine how you came to believe the truth that you know. I think you need feedback and community for that. It's the kaleidoscope of perspective that makes wanting to know the truth so enticing.

Of course there are universal truths. We're just not allowed to know what they are.

Everything is subjective except the Laws of Nature. And even then, the laws of Nature reflect the environment. Gravity is much greater on Jupiter and if u asked me to go for a 200 yd walk on Jupiter, I would say No Way ! But if u asked me to go for a 200 mile walk on the Moon, I'd say No Problem.

Saying water is wet is another stupid argument. Belly flop from the top of a 10 story building into a pool of water and tell me if water is wet. Water will feel like concrete from that height !

Perhaps each universal truth in any given moment is a combination of forces or what the majority of humanity is focused upon or believing in any give moment or period of time.

Does the fact that humans cannot seem to agree on this indicate that there isn't any such thing (for humans) because the answer is influenced by the free will to choose to believe in it or disbelieve in it's existence?

For example. I can tell you I can walk on water (which I in fact can). You can have your doubts unless I can prove it (which I can). Until I confirm it to you; it may not be a truth (yet) but when I do; it is.
That initial statement exists as a non truth (until proven) and a truth afterwards so it exists as both.
Then the proof itself also becomes a potential cause for concern. Does the fact that the water has to be frozen influence your new acceptance? If you didn't consider water in this revised state; it can become a potential challenge to your acceptance of the original statement, if you choose to only allow the way you considered water, to be water, as the issue at hand.
This is very specific. Your question might go to the broadest consideration and as such; a final, final answer must exist in my opinion. However, human nature may dictate that we create a lot of our own camouflage to hide it from ourselves. Maybe deep down; we don't want to be free??
This made me tired. I'm going back to bed. Truth!

I think there is a universal truth. I believe there are certain things that are right and certain things that are wrong. It's a concept I struggle with, as I have several close friends who are gay and the Catholic Church teaches against same sex marriage, etc. In spite of it all, I feel there has to be some kind of absolute truth out there--even if that truth is merely the fact that we do not know whether an absolute truth exists.

Whoa, I was pondering this earlier and I suppose in one sense there might be a universal truth in regards to how the universe works but on a human level? I suppose to each person there is their personal truth and then there a cooperative truth which is what we all agree to as laws and such. I think when perception is involved the truth is arbitrary.
reply
I certainly think there are things we can all agree on, such as the nature of the universe and everything around us.
