The cross was used as an instrument of punishment, punishment for the people who committed the worst crimes against the highest power. The Roman government used this instrument of punishment to torture to death the people who had offended them and ultimately Ceasar, who they thought was deity. I as a broken person have been an enemy, a hater of God, my creator. I deserved the ultimate punishment because I had committed the most heinous crimes against the highest power, the Creator of all of the universe. God, in his mercy, sent his Son, Jesus, to take the wrath that I deserved and because Christ was fully God and fully man he was able to bear the punishment and even overcome death. Now, because I am hidden in Christ, I do not have to bear the punishment for my sins. When God looks at me, he sees Jesus. I am perfect and spotless before my maker because my maker became my redeemer and is now my sustainer. Now I am free to do what I could have never done before, glorify God and enjoy him forever. Now that's a good day.

A professor asked this very question in a class the other day, only he was looking for the specific meaning of the symbol and everyone in class (a lot of Christians) was giving him vague, personal feelings on the matter. Haha, they all got pretty frustrated when he kept telling them they were flat out wrong. It seems people don't like hearing that about their beliefs much. I'll admit he was being a bit of a cuss but the man has a Ph.D. in religious studies and really knows his stuff... He just likes being annoying.
