Should marijuana be legalized or decriminalized? Should our laws adapt or stay the same?

With the "drug wars" that are waging in Mexico, illegal substances have become the topic of many discussions. California lawmakers have tried passing legislation to legalize marijuana, but what does that mean for the citizens? If, per say, marijuana was legalized, how would the government regulate the sale and trade of it? Would they cultivate their own strands of the drug and compensate the plants of local dealers? Would they set a limit on owning the plant itself? (i.e. each citizen can only have one plant, etc.) What would the legalization of marijuana mean for other drugs such as Salvia Divinorum, LSD, Mushrooms? Also, what would the legalization of marijuana mean for the tobacco industry? Give me some feedback here.

I personally feel illegal immigration is bad so we should stop jumping over borders and such......and school is dumb

I'm hopping on the train here.... Legalization would cripple the Mexican cartels, boost federal coffers (from expectedly high taxation), fund educational and health programs... Marijuana's medicinal uses are well documented. Hemp (which ISN'T Marijuana and will just give you a headache if you smoke it) can be used for a tonne of manufacturing products (+ more) and is currently criminal to grow. Millions of otherwise righteous Americans will be out of severely overcrowded jails, contributing to society. The DEA's expenditures would be slashed dramatically (saving tax money). Marijuana causes less intoxication and less dependency than CAFFEINE for crying out loud... It's benign by any stretch of the imagination. Legalize it already.

when the prohibition ended, the mafias disappeared. when we legalize marijuana, the cartels will suffer as well. its safer than cigarettes and alcohol anyway. i say ban cigarettes and legalize weed.

Yes!!! Along with pretty much every other illegal drug. Regulate. Tax. And funnel all the money into health care, quality drug rehabilitation for people who want it, and PUBLIC EDUCATION!!!

It should be legalized, regulated and taxed. Let our farmers grow it, our stores sell it, our government regulate it, and the citizens use it. There will be people who abuse it. But I don't think the numbers will be any higher than current abusers nor the social effects as bad as alcoholism.

I think it should be legalized, but there would have to be laws to govern its usage the way we govern alcohol. I also think that people should be educated in the ways it can ruin your life. It is much more insidious than most give it credit for. It can stop your growth and desire to move forward. It can impair your ability to drive and operate machinery, it will mess with your memory. All these things are risks that are real. If you have the fortitude to use it occasionally for recreation, I think you should be able to. There is also the money it would generate for our communities. All it does now is make money for the growers, dealers, and cops who confiscate their properties.
