3 weeks ago i wrote here talking about the difference between drugs that expand your mind and drugs that are just "feel good"... i'm a teenager (unfortunately) and my family's making a big deal because a friend's mom looked through his texts and found out that we had tried ecstasy. i'm livid about the way my family's handling it. they are so closed minded about drugs, there's not even a chance for them to think about any drug in terms of a spiritual experience/a way to expand your mind/a way to force aspects of yourself out of you artificially, so you can learn to apply them to your mind and your actions when you're sober, or even just a way to make sure you have a beautiful night. why can't people understand -- IT'S NOT THE ACTION OF DRUGS THAT ARE BAD, IT IS THE MINDSET THAT YOU HAVE TOWARDS THE ACTION. if you're not observant about the way a particular drug makes you feel, about a reaction that you have towards it, bad things are going to happen. of course if you consistently go into something wanting only to have a good time, a feel-good experience and continue chasing that, bad things are going to happen. that's not the mindset that you can have when you begin experimenting. i just wish my mom had enough trust in her own parenting, or at least enough trust in me as an individual, to trust that the mindset i have towards drugs is a solid one, that i only want to continue to use them in order to expand my mind and expand my search for self. why isn't this understood?? i'm really upset by it.

Drugs are used by elephants, chimps, cows... quite a number of animals, if you look into it. Drugs have been used in religion since the dawn of time. Presently, since our society says just so no, voices that just say, "Sure, thanks, man," are not even in the discussion. On our radio show Peace and Pipedreams, we tried to be balanced about our weed use, and the party drug use of others... People who have responsibly used drugs need to speak up and become role models. I get sooooo sick of celebrities who tell kids, I did drugs for twenty years and became famous, it was just pure hell... Well, crack, herion, coke, meth.... etc, are pure hell. You actually can become addicted to crack, meth... with one try. Lumping everything together is the problem. When pot is legalized, the way to smoke and when not to smoke would be clear, and peer pressure toward responsible use could finally get a shot.

DRUGS GOOD! I guess the government (n.america) is considering legalizing marijuana to get rid of the trillions debt that we have. That remains to be seen. To Zamfir - give me another beer!

A psychologist I knew mentioned that he had never treated a case of drug abuse in a teenager from a family where the parents had a healthy relationship. Looking at my friends and myself, the ones of us that went for the recreational drugs were the ones with home issues. The ones without those issues really were just not interested.

I personally think the entire drug industry has gotten out of control. My mother is one of those people that go to the doctor for absolutely every little ache and pain, and has had elective surgery one too many times. Doctors have been more than willing to feed her need for attention through health issues...She has been on at least a couple of perscription's at a time my entire life (I'm in my 50's). I have never, ever, known her to not be on a perscription drug.. Now, only in her 70's, she's showing advanced signs of alzheimers.. It's heartbreaking to see this woman who was always on top of everything, quick, intelligent and strong, asking the same questions over and over and over again, completely forgetting that she just asked that questions minutes before. When I look up the possibly side affects of some of the perscriptions she's taking, most of them include memory loss and forgetfullness. She's been on some of these drugs for years and years.... I have to wonder how much the continual use of perscription drugs have played a role in her memory problems. I think it would be much healthier if doctors would try to find natural cures for illness's rather than write perscriptions for man made drugs.. I personally don't take drugs, perscription or other wise, other than aspirin or ibuprofin when needed.

I'd have to say yes, seeing as how I'm one of those saved-by-Zoloft-people. Though in my case it was more like liberated and it's Fluoxetin not Zoloft. Zoloft just made me gain weight. I think prescription drugs are often more like mood/health levelers, not elevators. They make things work more reliably, whereas recreational drugs does the opposite. Suppose it all depends on what you're trying to achieve.

i think of course : everything in MODERATION. but sometimes i think there may be a difference in drugs that are used as value altering and expanding the mind, and drugs that are simple mood elevators. the drugs that are just "feel good" and really dont expand your mind seem to be more dangerous/more addictive than the drugs that are have to ability to truly open your mind...

Like you suggested, it depends on the person and a lot of factors. While all the attention goes to illegal substances, I strongly suspect it's the not-talked-about prescription drugs of the drug-pushing physicians and the pharmaceutical companies they are in bed with that are the major cause of all the havoc in this regard.

GOOD. Great...save lives. Like everything else, if overused, can be bad. MODERATION...which many people can't seem to do. Can you imagine life without Antibiotics?

I believe addiction is when drugs become bad. Recreational use every once in a while is fine and dandy as long as you can come back to function in society. For example, I love to trip off DXM but there are severe consequences if you abuse it. But when you drop once in a month on a weekend, no harm no foul. It's like a treat for your over-worked brain :)

When I was a hippie in the '70s, I dropped LSD as my first drug experience. I went on the roller coaster in Santa Cruz, CA while peaking. FUN. Back then, recreational drug use was widely accepted and practically expected. I tried purple microdot, orange sunshine, windowpane, magic mushrooms, etc. Then it was marijuana, coke, heroin (snorted once-ecchh),crystal meth, amphtamines, reds, whites, angel dust and the list goes on.I lived thru all the best drug decades. I never got addicted, it was strictly for fun. The problem is... you won't know if you are an addict till after you get hooked. I guess only the individual can decide if it's worth the risk. Now, I don't even take aspirin for a headache. Go figure. If you are in major pain, emotionally or physically, drugs can be a godsend. There are side effects that go with any drug you take so, again, only you can decide if it's worth the risk.

I agree with Murderface; though it may be frowned upon, I tend to use drugs recreationally quite frequently. But I've never taken anything unless I knew exactly and completely what it will do to me, and what the side effects are. I do excessive research pre-drugging. And I think i'm safe.

Recreational use can be good if taken by a responsible person. I'm not talking about heroine or huffing gas but things like shrooms (psilocybin), marijuana, kratom or kava are innocuous. Not to mention they can treat symptoms that you'd need a prescription for. Educators have a bad habit of lumping all drugs together into one nasty club when that does more harm than good. I was taught that speed, acid, heroine, weed ect. equal death. Being a rebellious youth I might try weed and realize that I feel fine and don't need to go to the hospital and ultimately that they lied. Thus, it can be a gateway for the really bad drugs.

Prescription drugs have been beneficial to many people, when used properly. I favor legalizing the use of medicinal marijuana--it has been demonstrated to be effective for many conditions including chronic pain. I don't do recreational drugs. I seldom take any presecription or over the counter drugs. I really believe people can get high, have "pychedelic" experiences, and even have tremendous spiritual breakthroughs without the use of any drugs. Its all a matter of self-discipline. Sme with stress relief; I believe doing it without drugs (or alcohol) is psychologically and physically healthier.
