What's your POV?

Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. Marcus Aurelius

Having worked in social services for years, I have different perspectives on a lot of things. For example when I see a homeless person on the street, I generally know what's going on in that picture.

And having had my family really early, gives me some been-there-done-that cred now that all my friends are having babies!

What unique viewpoint has your life afforded you?

After living with a parent with a horrible temper and then spending a few adult years stewing in my own rage over that experience, I've come to realize that anger is a volatile and wasteful emotion.

What is my point of view?
My mom shut the door on me if I cried for any reason growing up. She taught me,"If it demands attention. It deserves none." That told me 1. You are weak when you're not able to resolve conflict on your own. And 2. You can only receive respect by earning it.
Every initial thought I have of someone or someplace goes through these two criteria.

The ability to relate to people in very different circumstances. I have been homeless, I have eaten in shelters, slept under people's houses. I have also walked with influential people, traveled to dream vacation places, had the finest champagne brunches. I have learned to never look at someone else with disdain and think "I could never be like them..."

A combination of my beliefs, learning, life experiences, and bits and pieces of what other's are.

I understand what it feel like to want something so desperately and once I get it it feels worthless and not so important so it begs the question are all my want of this world relevant when I can't have it and once I get it it becomes none irrelevant? hmm.

I'm somewhat capable of imagining myself in other shoes, somewhat empathetic. So its less of a view point and more of a viewing station.

A birds eye view..

I understand drug addicts, even though my experience was thankfully squashed with rehab at 16. Young mother as well, I have experienced a lot in my relatively short life and as such, I hold few judgements against people. I actually try to see everyone's point of view. Mind you it can be annoying being so understanding. :0)

I would really like to know what is in that picture for you.

Perspective fascinates me. The way my own experience acts as much as a blindfold as a light. The way my history insinuates itself into almost every event. The degree to which I unconsciously insert my deadly certainties. The assumptions I make about how my view is the obvious one.

I don't believe that unique is a relevant concept here. I don't require it and have not observed it. It seems to me that uniquity would have trouble communicating with anything ubiquitous.

I suppose the main advantage is that having a perspective at least allows me to notice that others also have them.

I know how to build a road that wont wash out during a flood or storm.
I know what it feels like to go to war, watch your fellow soldiers die and see the world the way it truly is.
I know what it is to be a father of two wonderful kids that grew up to be successful adults.
I can remember a nation that was once great and I can see what it turned into and why it happened.
Perhaps my POV is unpopular. So be it.

I grew up deferring to others. My older sisters. My traditional and conventional parents. My teachers and many of my friends. I always accepted that they knew better.

Over the years, many things occurred that illustrated I could be right sometimes and I don't have to continuously have to prove myself because I have security in knowing I am right more often than I am wrong, however, I am wrong plenty too.

Now, I put forward my opinions with confidence and don't really care that much if people disagree with me, as long as it doesn't affect me, either directly or indirectly. We all have our own row to hoe and we will always get to where where we are meant to be based on our own route.

I will still defer to people who have earned my respect but now, it doesn't come easily. Bullies get zero and I still get jaded by those who come across as superior. The ones that come across as superior do get the benefit of the doubt though, because I know how easily it is to be mistakenly perceived that way.

The only person I will always defer to is my wife. She has proven over time to always have our best interests at heart and her steadfast consistency to my volatile enthusiasm allows me a reliable sense perspective. I don't ever take this effective partnership that works for granted.

I don't think my point of view is a merciful one.

Don't get me wrong, I have a great family, and everything on that front is peachy, but I grew up an obese kid, and as a result, I was picked on, a lot.

I've come to terms with that stage of my life, and it doesn't hold me back anymore, but it reminds me that a lot of people are really unkind, even if they try not to be. There's something inside of everyone that feeds on cruelty, and I saw that firsthand, day after day.
