In my experience, people who wish to cause pain or harm others are usually lashing out because of their own pain. Emotions can get the best of almost anyone, under the right conditions, and forethought can get left behind in their haste/desire to act. (A condition akin to temporary insanity) And not everyone has a conscience to prevent such behavior.

Sometimes people can be... not smart. I'm not sure if people knew the true consequences of their actions before hand that they would still partake in the activity, because the only time Iv'e ever seen that be the case, it was in a Blockbuster. Nothing against movies, but they are not the best places to base our life principles on. Ultimately, however, if the person still chooses to be a part of the behavior, they will feel the wrath of the action anyway. John Green has said, "That's the thing about pain: it demands to be felt."

generally it's greed and selfishness. they are blinders. people don't think about consequences if they think they'll come out on top, or get what they want. i used to be like that. then one day, i stopped and thought about how much pain i'd already caused people who actually gave a crap about me, and how much more pain i'd cause them if they knew everything. I tried to feel that pain for myself. I became really depressed about the person i had become and stopped being shady and evil...

When I was on drugs, like the hard drugs. I would get high and all fucked up so I wouldn't have to deal with my reality. It was a way to just, forget and relax. I remember, I'll never forget this, I had a really stupid counselor LOL But she told me 'metaphorically' "If you got shot, instead of finding legitimate help, you would rather stab yourself repeatedly instead of feeling the gunshot".

The reasons are legion and entirely circumstantial. And if anyone here thinks they can see into the minds of people acting in ways which cause pain to themselves and suffering to others, then they are fooling themselves.

This is a fact I recently realized. There are lots of people who understand the consequences of their actions and how they are going to hurt others severely. However, they still do it. I guess that's the definition of '' Bad People " they know and they still do it...

I don't know anybody that has a crystal ball. That being said, the only people that I know who "intentionally" might inflict pain and suffering on others or even themselves are probably psychopathic.
