I think it all depends on what you personally base it on. If you have very convincing evidence point to your opinions then I'm all for it. I just hate it when people get into conspiracy theories based completely on hearsay and do it just to jump on the bandwagon.

To this point in my life I've found that the truth is usually hidden from you and you have to earn glimpses of reality based upon how comfortable people are with you and how much they trust you. Why not to conspiracy theories? No one on this earth has any idea of the reality of every single situation that's occurred through out mankind. Think about what you think you know and how you know it?

As far as what makes people want to believe them, with me, I like to be surprised by things no one thinks about, they also make life more interesting.
Question everything, we have the right.

Some are politically motivated , many are most likely untrue, some could have some truth. The tendency to believe conspiracy theories in general represents a mindset, a view on government credibility. It's a problem when people believe all conspiracy theories, even when there is enough scientific evidence to disprove it --

they're interesting to debate about, but there is never an answer. the only answer is your own opinion. that's why they call them conspiracies.

I love conspiracy theories (just like I love good fiction). But they're actually all more or less baloney. In the end, if you really think them through and analyze them, they all fail at some point or require an incredible leap of faith. Some might have the one or the other grain of truth though.

For the German readers, this is a very good book on the subject: http://goo.gl/X6Idy

Occasionally theories about a given event could have some credence simply because there's the possibility that few enough people were involved in that particular secret. When it comes to the notion of whole overarching secret societies though it stops being even remotely credible - ie. narcissists and crooks don't work well together and the temptation to be the most famous person in history for blowing the whistle is too ever-present.

Conspiracy theories tend to assume a combination of intelligence, precision and discretion that I rarely, if ever, find in people. They make for good discussion and entertainment, like a good spy novel, but are generally pure hokum in the real world.

I believe that some conspiracy theories eventually lead to the truth, like a snowball effect, plus they keep people interested in events that are significant to the past.

We all know that we're lied to by those in positions of power and influence. We don't always know exactly when and about which subject.

As with most non-scientific (so-called) theories, they are comprised of mostly conjecture and very little fact. But that doesn't mean they're all 100% wrong either!
