We are artists at birth -or earlier- at conception. The human body is art in motion.

Your life is art. Being an artist can mean many things. You have to have introspection and a desire to express what is in the depths of your soul. So yes, I think that anyone CAN be an artist if they want to be.

I think it is a combination of both. I firmly believe that people are born with skills, or the ability to do something very easily. But, it's all for not if a recognition is not made. One has to recognize one's ability to create if one is going to develop those skills. In short, I think to be able to possess forward thinking and creativity you have to be born with it. But, to develop those skills, you have to recognize that you are one of the few who are blessed with it.

I remembered a classic that speaks to this topic... a great read about both the practice and the experience of art.

'The Art Spirit' by Robert Henri (1923)
"There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom. If one could but recall his vision by some sort of sign. It was in this hope that the arts were invented. Sign-posts on the way to what may be. Sign-posts toward greater knowledge." [Robert Henri]

I believe every newborn has a whole bunch of skills ready to develop. Then you give importance to some and forget other. The sooner you start working on them, the better they develop.

I believe this because i teach music to little children and they reveal a greater potential than most of adults. Also between my groups, younger ones reveal greater potentials.
And even more, particularly about music, your mother can also start giving something to you while you're still in her belly. :)

You may be born artistic but you are made into an artist.

Still, as is the case with many things, it helps to start early.

I don't think anybody is "naturally born" to be anything. I think it helps if you have some kind of talent for something..but then you still have to kind of hone your skills.

art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder

I think certain people naturally possess more of an affinity for some tasks as opposed to others. Some people are good at math innately, others are born with perfect pitch. That being said, I've seen people who are literally tone deaf sing wonderfully, and people who hate numbers make A's on math tests.

I think it's both. People are naturally talented at some things and have to work at others. No one should not do what they want just because it takes more work or more practice than it does for others. If anything, that extra work might make them appreciate what they are doing more.

It depends on what you define as art! An artist defines certain things that they do as art, they do them because they believe it is art, they want to create art and thus they are an artist.

Art can have inherent meaning, but it doesn't have to.
I think the key to being an artist is having the right reasons for doing what you do. If you ask a painter why they paint, and they say, "for money", or "for love", then they are are painter, or a lover, but painting is not an art for them.

I suck at drawing, but I love doing it, so I hope that one can become a great artist solely through practice,

You can TOTALLY practice. Just do exercises you know are good to improve your artistic ability. I'm naturally good at art, but I still suck, because I still have lots of practice to do.

I think that artists are born with the potential to make great pieces of art but they have to discover their talent through practice. I think that anyone who creates art is an artist and that's up to the public opinion to decide whether your art is "good" or "bad". I also think that people born with the potential and talent to be great will surpass those who don't have the potential. And that's okay.

An artist friend once gave me some useful advice on become an artists. She described it as a long search and hard struggle to find one's own 'voice' or philosophy. There is a lot of risk taking and a considerable commitment to the process.

In other words, talent is useful, yes, but the hard part for some may be in discovering what one wants to say through their art -- this requires an artistic commitment.

It just depends on if you enjoy it, and then practicing it, to get the "look" or "style" that YOU think is key. After that it depends on how well you market your creations, like how the public likes it, and it's originality.

Joni Mitchell wrote an amazing song about this very question. The idea came from her reading about the Canadian education system trying to "create" artists. I'll leave you to decide which side of the question she comes down on. It's not the one I would have guessed.

Turbulent Indigo
by Joni Mitchell
You wanna make Van Goghs
Raise 'em up like sheep
Make 'em out of Eskimos
And women if you please
Make 'em nice and normal
Make 'em nice and neat
You see him with his shotgun there?
Bloodied in the wheat?
Oh what do you know about
Living in Turbulent Indigo?
Brash fields crude crows
In a scary sky
In a golden frame
Roped off
Tourists guided by
Tourists talking about the madhouse
Talking about the ear
The madman hangs in fancy homes
They wouldn't let him near!
He'd piss in their fireplace!
He'd drag them through Turbulent Indigo
"I'm a burning hearth" he said
"People see the smoke
But no one wants to warm themselves
Sloughing off a coat
And all my little landscapes
All my yellow afternoons
Stack up around this vacancy
Like dirty cups and spoons
No mercy Sweet Jesus!
No mercy from Turbulent Indigo"
