Anyone, no matter how much training they go through, still feels the suppressive effect of live rounds when being fired at. If someone had a concealed weapon and good enough aim, they may have been able to put him off balance long enough to take him down. The bullets would not have penetrated his armor, as he had obviously planned in case the police were inside. Although an armed citizen could not have completely prevented the incident, he could have bought enough time for people to escape and officers of the law to arrive at the scene. We have no way of knowing if it would have made things better or worse, this is just my opinion. Comment on it as you will, and thanks for bringing this topic up, JR2point0.

No and anyone telling us it's a certainty that a brave citizen with a concealed weapon could react that quickly and "prevent" the shooting is delusional. The nutjob had planned it, had surprise on his side, the only way it could have been prevented was if he'd had the foresight to take himself out before he took out his anger on others.

It has already been shown that the answer to this question is yes. A man with a legally concealed weapon at a casino recently stopped a robbery. Now would this lunatic have still killed some people? Most likely. But he could possibly have been stopped before he killed and wounded as many as he did.

For those bringing up the fact that he was wearing a helmet and a bullet proof vest - you DO realize that these items don't give you Superman-like immunity to bullets, right? Getting shot while wearing a vest is like getting hit in the chest with a baseball bat. It WILL still drop you and possibly break some ribs, it just won't kill you.

No.
Even in the situations where it might be possible to fire off one shot, it has been shown that it's far more likely that a brave citizen with a concealed weapon would shoot innocent people (for various reasons). There is a reason the police are the police - it takes special training to avoid killing the innocent (and they don't always succeed in avoiding that either).

The killer picked the perfect vantage point and situation for a mass murder. He had no weak points except for the fact that he gave up in the end. We can at least find peace in that he has been caught and will most likely get the chair. I don't think anything could have stopped him but this; if an armed civilian / officer of the law / military person witnessed him entering through the back of the theatre, they could have stopped him. But that's a one in a million chance. A once in a million chance we all wish we could have gotten.

Judging by the amount of body armor, tear gas, and heavy weaponry the perp brought to the table, the best and only option would be to run and dial 911. Unless it was an NRA viewing party for The Dark Night Rises. In that case the gunman might have been overwhelmed with the sound of gunshots and impact. Even then, it wouldn't have been pretty.

If you're in a crowded theatre watching a movie, in the darkness and have can of tear gas dropped in your lap no, your best bet is to probably crouch down, grab your ankles, and kiss your arse goodbye.

As for running a 24 hour convenience store, being the 100lb woman who drops off the deposits at the end of the night, or if you're commuting to work in a rough area - likely a much different story. One word of caution though; if there's open ground between you and them and its less than 21 feet though you can forget the gun.

It's doubtful. From most of the reports I've read, the suspect was heavily armed, and also had a bullet-proof vest and helmet on. As one that has a concealed weapon permit (even though I hardly ever carry) I don't think anything could have been done. It's one thing if someone tries to mug you in the street and you have the ability to defend yourself, it's entirely different when a guy bursts into a crowded theater, pops tear gas (reportedly) and walks up and down the stairs shooting people with high powered rifles at random. Can you imagine the fear and confusion? A few hundred people literally running for their lives in the dark, stepping over dead and wounded bodies...

Unfortunately I don't think this could have been prevented.

If no citizen had access to any firearms this could have been completely prevented.

It would be a snap judgement to shoot someone before he starts shooting. I am sure less people would have died if someone could have carried a weapon and been that alert to the possibility of what could happen and stop him, but rarely would anyone be that fast on the draw.
