Such comparisons/competitions really don't net us personally or the species as a whole, anything of value.

They create artificial hierarchies of "who is better than who"; and in doing so totally deny that while we are all individuals, we are all created equal and basically live our lives on a level playing field.
Artificially elevated or reducing people doesn't net us or the species, anything of value.

Tesla was a guy who loved inventing things. Thomas Edison was more like a businessman. He created the first lab dedicated to invent things with commercial purposes. The light bulb was an invention of Joseph Swan (although other inventors started the research almost 80 years before) but since the patent was in UK, Edison patented it the US.

Tesla also worked at Edison's lab were he improved many of Edison's inventions multiplying the company's profits in the process. Since he was working under Edison's Lab, all his inventions of the time belonged to the lab.
After being offered $50,000 (That's like $1M nowadays) for redesigning Edison's generators and requesting this amount of money, Edison used the famous quote "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor".
Many of Tesla's friends even mentioned that he used to invent machines in his own head, mentally test them and once proven that it worked, he would rest importance to it and jump to his next idea. Since everything happened in his head, many of this inventions were lost.
At the end of his life Tesla started working on a charge-particle beam which seemed to be a very promising weapon. Because of this, after his death, the US government took all the research papers that Tesla had.
I don't think Tesla was discredited by his achievements. He still got many patents for many of his inventions and it is because of him that the US runs on AC power (which in terms of production is more efficient). The problem is that Edison is more recognized than Tesla and a lot of people find that unfair (including myself).
