I value proper grammar and find it important in communication but I also find myself, when I judge someone else's grammar, realizing it's an opportunity for me to be less judgmental.

I'm not particualarly a grammar n**i, but I think it's important to remember that the "rules" of grammar are not universal. Grammatical rules for American English (and yes, english is not english is not english) do not necessarily apply to other languages, and, even in American english they may not apply..or may be different in different areas of the country. Personally, I find them too damn hard to keep up with.

as far as the medical profession goes, Latin is the language of science. and most scientists..as well as doctors and nurses..even if they don't speak english or german or french..do understand the latin terminology for "thigh bone". so it's really not "silly".
IDK that "proper" grammar is necessary because IDK what "proper grammar" is, really. I think the main focus of communication might be "say what you mean and mean what you say". however you say it.

Good grammar is vital to clear communication as well as being a hallmark of competence and not infrequently, of literacy.

You must understand people will assume you're not very bright when you use poor grammar, and don't expect to make a lot of money in your life.
The flip side? Good grammar has opened doors to me because people think I'm smarter than I am.
If you want to be taken seriously you should use the language as best you can.

In this global world- not everybody uses english the way americans do. It pisses me off when abbreviations are used etc ( even medically- because a german doctor wont necessarily know what an american abbreviation means) For the sake of everybody being able to understand, I say knock it off!

When I was in America last time, people would make jokes about commercials on TV. If you had not seen the commercial you didnt know what they were talking about.
