I have done some pretty cool things and helped a lot of people and overall been a pretty cool guy but these days being a Baha'i is my greatest gift to humanity. I'm not doing as a much as I want to right now but I think that working towards all of these elements in the Baha'i Faith is a very nice contribution. I think that I am making the world a better place. No doubt, there are many ways to do it but for me this is what I connect with. :)

I wanted to do some great things... but people were unwilling to pay to help themselves, and so the business failed.

Would helping random strangers beyond family, friends and work count? Volunteering with a children's charity? Stopping to lend some hope to someone who thinks there is none left in the world? Some missions work perhaps?

Habitat for Humanity?
Collect for Unicef?
Help organized a trust fund for someone who really needs a leg up after a tragedy or mishap?
Help with a meal at the local soup kitchen?
Re-unite a wallet with its owner?
Smile at someone without wanting anything in return?
All things that can be done with ego in check . . . or with it raging. It's entirely up to the individual.

To me it's all relative. I know I made a difference in people's lives, and them to me in profound ways that have shaped who I am and to some degree everyone does that. There are people out there who probably don't remember, but things they did or said have made a huge impact on how I see the world. Sometimes its a small gesture that may seem insignificant to you that makes a huge difference to someone else.

I work with troubled teens, I've seen my contribution pay off that some have moved on to college, and not jail. Some are sober and alive today, and not dead from an overdose.

It's not that my ego is " big enough" to claim this, it's that I have to see there is a diffrence being made, otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I'm surprised by the manner in which you pose this question. As you clearly intend to alienate anyone who thinks that their contributions in life actually do benefit humanity by attaching the idea that it is only because of a big ego that they would ever consider that.

Can't you see that by viewing others in this way, it is YOUR ego and perception that disconnects from the idea that any good deed can have a positive effect that may snowball into something worthwhile and meaningful?
I personally think that your attitude in this matter is quite pessimistic. Which can be an obstacle for many people unable to notice the positive contributions of others.
If our mind is open, we can find inspiration from many places. I am able to notice the contributions others have made to my life, big and small. Be it through music, which can reach a lot of people, or through discussion, that may let ideas grow and resonate strongly enough to create positive changes within people's lives.
I suppose it all depends on what level can be regarded as mattering or not, or whether anything anyone ever does actually matters or not. That is for the individual to decide and the more things that seem to matter, the more meaningful their world becomes. Which is a beautiful thing within itself, and who is anyone else to say that that isn't important?

I voted for Obama. But that hasn't exactly turned out to be as big a contribution as I'd hoped.

Yes - and it doesn't require a big ego to "Claim it" - more a balanced and realistic look at what one has done and why over a long period of time.

Fortunately I have had a good mix of savage wake up calls as to things I was doing that achieved the opposite -
and also some wonderful feedback from people I had helped -
in the long term one can never know if what you did helped advance human kind -
but helping people to have a better life is about as good as it gets.

Cure cancer? No. But isn't doing something for humankind as simple as doing something in your community that alleviates suffering? Our family focuses on ending world hunger, so we contribute locally, nationally, and internationally. It may not be the cure for cancer but we consider it our contribution to humankind.

You may not be rich, or famous, but, without a doubt, you have impacted many lives..whether you know it or not. Is that not "contibuting to humanity"?

It is not easy to contribute to humanity anyway. If you are looking for remarkable contributions then you won't find much. However, if you are looking for regular contributions, every male and female doing their jobs fully in their offices and institutes are basically contributing to this world in one way or another. The janitor who is keeping our place clean is helping the human-kind. I am studying right now to contribute to this world one day.

They and their kids are remarkably intelligent , involved and loving people .
I wonder how many people they each influence daily in a positive manner ?
Sociological studies show that each of us has some influence on 26 different people in our lives .
So there are now seven lives that my wife and I had a lot to do with guiding .
I consider this a gift to the betterment of the world that didn't come from me rather through me ..
And my great grand kids will no doubt pass on much of this health .
and so on...
