Lots of opinions on this thread. First off, I agree with some of the points others have made, that there are different types of meditation. So, it can be helpful to be clear about what type of meditation one has been practicing and what one expects to find. Mindfulness-meditation, which can include body scans, that you may be alluding to isn't necessarily supposed to feel pleasant per se, the aim is to become more aware of whats happening in our current experience, to turn towards what we're feeling in our bodies, our emotions, our thoughts, and sometimes by doing this we come to suffer less, by struggling less with reality, what's happening, and also by appreciating the wonder of what's actually happening in our lives rather than unknowingly wondering off in our thoughts. But, like I said that's one approach to meditation. A pioneer in disseminating this type of meditation is Jon Kabat-Zinn who has a number of books on Amazon that could be pursued if interested.

But the short of answering your question: Bad is a judgment that the mind puts onto experience. I routinely do feel unpleasant sensations and emotions when meditating, but often feel less encompassed by them by realizing that my awareness is larger than them.

Then you're doing it wrong. Try binaural beats. they're a great training aid. Don't focus on anything. In fact, try to unfocus and remove thoughts from your mind. It's difficult at first but gets easier with practice. that is the type of meditation that science is showing is the most effective - by far.

Why are you meditating?

if it's a "bad experience" then I don't do it. the whole purpose of meditation, IMHO, is to relax and "de-stress", if it's creating /more/ stress..then I ain't doing something "right".

I agree that walking meditation may be helpful. Instead of focused attention on the body, place your awareness in the world around you--birds, traffic, wind, sky, etc. Not to say the point of mediation is to have a pleasant experience, but if you are a beginner it is good to find a method that works for you and is not overwhelming.

I wouldn't describe my experiences as bad--they've always been helpful in some way. But sometimes the experience is unpleasant. I've found myself feeling very vulnerable in sitting meditation, a hyper awareness of how fragile my body is, how transient life is. Sometimes when I sit watching thoughts coming and going, I feel how strange and illusory the 'self' is. I'm not sure if any of that makes sense :) But the feeling that there's nothing solid to hang on to can be a bit unsettling at times.

Best to have a spotter with a stun gun for when that happens. Of course you need a predetermined safe word.

Not sure I'd describe it as bad, but certainly during meditation I've had "intense" experiences the same as I've had "intense" experiences on pot.

My practice doesn't include focusing on anything in the physical world. Maybe I'll try an experiment as see what happens.

Try focusing outwards and see if that helps. Some people simply can't "sit" in meditation. Walking meditation, creative or other movement forms of meditation can be much more effective if it's the case of feeling forced to sit.

I wish I could do it- I have tried. But I just cant manage it. Meditation I am sure would be so good for me. I`ve stared into candles and thought kind and loving thoughts. I`ve even tried to look for that space between thoughts.
