Welfare is like communism. It sounded great in theory, but there are to many people abusing the system, leading to it‘s downfall. I’m not sure that I think it should be removed, but strictly re-evaluated, so that we can flush out the scum bags that have been living on it for generations, and using it not to get by, but for wealth, and material gain…

Yes- welfare should be for people who need it. But when you let everybody into your country who have no means to support themselves- then these people will drain the country of its social benefits. Canada only lets people in who have skills and work. That is why their social aid and heathcare works. You want to talk about abuse? It is abuse for people to come to America- what they consider is the land of milk and honey-without any real means of supporting themselves- and live off of social welfare. America needs to guard its borders!

It's not that simple, picture this. Your parents came to the U.S from a poor country they didn't have the luxury of finishing school because, surviving day to day living is priority where their from. They make it to the US "legally" to the land of opportunity, learn as best English as the can (imagine i put you in japan today and telling you learn Japanese) your not gonna be an expert over night.

You have no education, to America standards to become a corporate business man or women however, you are willing to work and work hard (so you live in a city) New York lets say because suburbs are obviously not a choice and, you probably already have relatives in the city. A 1-bedroom apartment today goes for minimum 1500$ dollars a month, and to have electricity we can add another bout another 300$ dollars a month, plus a Gas bill. (to have cable, a car, or just to save money is a no go)
What Job, without any scholastic education do you know can handle that on minimum wage? Which only leaves you with at most 750$ & by weekly if your lucky and it's probably not likely that much. Surly it would be a job that's killing your body day in and day out, for God knows how many years.
But you do it because, at least your kids will have chance you never had. And maybe you suck at English, but your kids won't.
Many foreigners in the US are very hard working, honest, peaceful people that come here and end up living in a government issued project apartment, which are usually dangerous as hell because, that's where most the trouble and stress looms. The children here sometimes become products of their surroundings and it's like a domino effect.
Welfare keeps food in the fridge, you really cant understand These "people that don't need it" until you live it for yourself, then you can see what it's really like.
Note: your average american would say that's the ghetto, but to a person coming from a poor country having only ever had one pair of shoes. hand washing cloths ect... The "ghetto" here in the US is a paradise by comparison.

I'll put it this way. I don't think it should be more advantageous to not work than to work. If we can work that out, I don't think I'd have much else to b*tch about.

In that small regard. :)

Personally I think they should just outsource a lot of government jobs to welfare people according to their capacity to work. Not everyone can do everything, but plenty can do something.

Cutting off welfare would probably ignite a revolution.

Not necessarily, but it should be reformed in order to help support those who are not able to work indefinitely, but it should be used as a process of helping people find work by giving them enough money for living expenses (food, shelter, gas to find a job), by using the bare minimum amount, it creates an incentive for people to go out and find jobs.

It needs to be reformed, big time. People who are capable of work shouldn't be on welfare for life. People take advantage of the system as it is.

You have to remember, without welfare, you can imagine the crimerate. It may be the government nipple that many many suck off, but it's better than a blade between the ribs.

Welfare shouldn't be a support system, it should be an emergency net. That doesn't mean we should cut it, it means the emergency net should include career counseling, higher education, job assistance, drug rehab etc. There should be a system that can safely stop people from needing welfare.

It's tough to distinguish who really needs it. I think they should have mandatory drug tests for people that are between the ages of 18-55

End the welfare to corporations, direct and indirect, to bankers, Wall Street, the warmongers and war profiteers first, make those who speculate pay taxes at the same actual rate as those who at least come close to earning it, stop management compensations designed to elude taxation, and then we can go after those rip off artists in the lower class, eating jello and living in shacks on the government teat.
