Promised Land?

What do you think of the notion of a promised land? You might first think of the jews, and their claim that God has promised them the land of Israel. But also, I believe this thought permeates through a lot of different religions and times.. for instance, people make pilgrimages, and build shrines in most every religion, often as a marking of their own miniature "promised land". And how about the evangelical americans who seem to think the promised land is america? how about mormons? what about mecca and rome?

What do you think?
