I like chantarella's answer. This is like a big party you would go to. Over there, a little group is deep into some big philosophical question. Further over, some folks talking about music. There's the kids sitting in the corner getting high! A few have come to flirt and try out different personas. There's one standing alone masturbating (what kind of party is this?). Then there's the little group standing on the balcony, looking down at the proceedings, just talking sh*t and criticizing everyone they see. There's a whole bunch of people just looking into a mirror. Once in a while a small fight breaks out, but soon calm is restored. People come and people go. Sometimes it's exciting, but a good deal of the time it's a little boring. When new people come to the party, the ones who got there first b*tch about how crowded it's getting and what as*holes the newcomers are. Then there's a little small talk, and it's discovered that some of the party-crashers are pretty cool and we're glad they stayed. Then a call is made to Oprah, and everybody hits the deck!

Not to a*s kiss but I ree-ally love the last update. I like the various topical videos people post the most. I also like to read the random person's well thought response in supporting their position. I've often had my socks blown off when least expecting it here. There are dry spells but you always know something great is in store down the road.

Questions and answers from seekers, searchers, know it all's, religious types, juveniles who still answer questions based entirely on their penis (exhibit A & B have already answered), and kids wanting someone else to do their homework for them. Sometimes it's a rich experience and other times it's a complete waste of time.

For me, it is just as much about discovering what I think about an issue as much as allowing other opinions to shape my own.

I think our brains try to juggle a lot of half thoughts that mix and mingle and you can have a general sense about what you believe. To write it down and throw it out there for all to potentially kick at; you need to back up your BS or curl up in the fetal position. So you try to figure out why you think what you do before you write it. I am constantly surprised by what I think as stupid as that sounds.
The other thing that can happen in here fascinates me. Many people, myself included, will look at a question from a pre-disposed perspective and automatically take a stance that hasn't openly received data presented by others that are in opposition to a personally held belief. Many times, the actual question doesn't even get answered and the place becomes a platform for whatever key message a person wants to voice.
Although there are some great minds in here, capapable of putting a lot of rational facts into play; in many cases, it is not an either/or situation. It can be a blend and as long as that foundation can be realized, then I think there is great personal value in being exposed to multiple perspectives.

What is important to you? That's what it's about! It's about Life's Big Questions, which certainly vary from person to person! It's about anything anyone truly cares about.

Albrecht Dürer, Leonardo DaVinci- you name em- all used to go to their local pub or whatever and talk about stuff. Dürer had a beer with his friends ( to the frustration of his wife who thought she had married a printer and not a real artist) and spent hours talking about anything that interested him... and he was interested in a LOT. Not just art and printing, but philosophy and science and physics and all the "modernities" of his era including current affairs. Now and then there was banal fun stuff I`m sure, but mainly they talked about big ideas. I`m not saying that we have Dürers or DaVincis here- but we`re doing the same thing.
