Too much analysis on the rules for argumentation. One might think you aspire to be confrontational. Relax.

The way a 'conversation' is started is often misleading. You get to the bottom of the text and there is the real question! I myself have been known to start a 'conversation' with an inflammatory headline and bury the lead, only to end up discussing that which I may have not really meant anyway, lol.

It happened to me here on soulpancake this week. Need a rallying cry to nip it in the bud ------------ how about Burn the Fing Strawman!

I like the idea. When I see people doing this, I'm usually frustrated at first, and then amused. I always wonder if the people who are doing it are aware of what they are doing or if they truly don't get it. I end up ignoring them.

The straw man is deaf, dumb and blind. Take from my statement what ever you will. I refuse to argue with people who resort to name calling in an attempt to strengthen their argument.

That technique is way too well thought out for me to use. I don't understand why people can't jut agree to disagree on some stuff, instead of lowering the bar to being petty and name calling. Really, who are you trying to prove a point to? If the person at the other end isn't budging, and the discussion is going nowhere, I would just let it go, its like banging your head against the wall.

I suppose it's okay, so long as you hold yourself to the same standard.

But there should also be a fallacy where one declares one's own arguments a victory. It's propaganda. Egotistical propaganda.

I have had such a conversation the other night here. I stated what I saw in the desert and was told that I did not see them. However, I did. And a bill that was signed that looks harmless if you read it flat, had holes in it that would give law enforcement license and incentive to arrest protesters. It could bury our rights to assemble and protest.

A person began to flip out and start his dialogue with "f*ck me sideways. For craps sake."
As soon as he started that, and telling me I did not see what I know I did see, i was less and less inclined to answer him, or address him at all. I do not like being belittled and called a delusional, brainwashed, demented fuckwit. Calling me such only makes it less likely that I would engage in any conversation with him in the future. He resorted to name calling and I simply considered the source and moved on. Big fail.
Another person addressed me and did not do this. I was able to explain how I saw in the bill the loophole that would take away a citizen's right to petition the government for regress of grievances if arrested because the law enforcers use unbridled discretion as to what is a disturbance and whether, or not, the protester "knew" of the presence of Secret Service --- who don't always wear suits, but could be peppered throughout the protesting mob wearing plain clothing. Secret Service does not always wear suits and they won't identify themselves with T-shirts saying "Secret Service" because that would take the "secret" out of it. The big loopholes will make it easier to prosecute under "knowingly".
...But what do I know. I'm just a delusional, brainwashed, demented fuckwit who is digusting.

What you propose in the first paragraph has happened to me quite a few times -- especially on this site. The second happens also in real life,
