Life is the mechanism by which the universe powers it self to function. Your cells are life and they function you, as you function the earth and the earth is life that helps function the solar system, and so on.

The real questions is, does all life "know" that it "functions"? Humans know they "are", does an ant know? Do trees know?

Life is the condition of having signaling and self sustaining processes. Things that are living have internal chemical reactions to sustain them, maintain a balance of internal conditions, can grow and respond to external conditions, and can reproduce and evolve over successive generations. (paraphrased from wikipedia.)
