The massive attention devoted toward the presidential election really serves as little more than a distraction from the real center of authority: Congress. If you look at the President's enumerated powers, they really don't add up to much. He's somewhat of a national figurehead and, in many cases, scapegoat. The potential to create change is embedded in Congress, the lobbyist cesspool of corporate politicking. And how do you get the changes you want in Congress? By changing Congress, 535 representatives at a time... I agree with Emma Goldman. The process of voting is really just designed to give the illusion of democracy.

I think it does make a big difference. We would have been in a depression if Obama had not been elected. We would never have the Affordable Care Act if Obama lost to McCain. DADT would still be in effect. We may not have had the war in Iraq if Bush hadn't been re-elected. Whether you liked the changes or not, there are lots of things that changed because people voted.

It depends on how you look at it. If you only go off of the peoples vote, then yes every vote matters. but the way that our system is set up, our representatives have the opportunity to deviate from what the people they represent says, then apparently it doesn't matter what the American people want anyways, and we might as well give up trying.

BUT you can't ever complain about who does become elected if you didn't vote!

interesting part of the democratic process, however, how we go about voting with a two party, winner take all system is too risky and a plurality vote should be taken into consideration. Also, term limits for members of congress need to be imposed. The only branch of government which should have a life term is SCOTUS, however for a member of congress to hold the same office for theoretically an infinite amount of time is redundant, this also limits the democratic process for voters as well.

You can argue about how effective voting is, but there can be no question that *not* voting is completely ineffective.

Yeah... this sort of reasoning doesn't hold water. Though many informed people are cynical, being cynical doesn't make you informed.

Voting counts, which is why they bother to count votes. Waiting for the perfect pizza to make itself is nothing more than apathy.
