The desire to be better comes pretty naturally. I find if I'm pushing myself to be a better person, the easier it is to achieve respect and harmony from those around you. For me, it is those connections that really matter, developing an attitude that gives others the opportunity to invoke a bit of wisdom themselves. Those moments feel like little miracles to me and therefore validate its purpose in my life.

I constantly think to myself "if I can just get through this, then my life will be better".

A desire to function optimally (maintain healthiness), avoid the failures or mistakes of others, be respected, give back to the world, make a positive impact on others, be successful and comfortable, find out more about the universe and also biology and try to make positive changes/additions to our knowledge and techniques, make the environment better, be the best I can be, use what I've been given to the fullest extent as well as resources, better the human race, be remembered for a long time for good things, somehow live for a much longer time period (so there needs to be advances in science and biology), and just be happy in general.

A bit of pride, a bit of self esteem, a bit of love for myself...in short, a bit of ego :)

I think "better person" is relative. I just try to live my life the way that makes me happiest.

The realization that improvement is superior to non-improvement. I am propelled away from states which I do not value towards states I admire and value.

Isn't that the whole point of life? I do it because I want to better myself and perfect my soul. Of course, I believe that we all have an eternity and numerous lifetimes in which to do this. But I can't answer what it is that drives me to better myself, because it's my belief that it's hardwired in me. It just is.

I like to refer to this quote when I am feeling hopeless and/or useless. It's called "The True Meaning of Life".
