So simple, but a fantastic reminder that the hard work put into something has all kinds of rewards.

It's one of those attributes you'd never bestow upon yourself. Whether the person who said it was right or not, it is something that has stuck. I feel more inclined to live up to it.

I know, I know...how conceited! I'm not one who likes to brag. (I actually try to be as humble as I possibly can, because I believe in doing to others what you want done to them [I don't want Mr. Know-It-All shoving his achievements in my face, so I don't shove mine in people's faces]). That being said, my whole life I've wanted to be a child prodigy. Which is weird, I know, but I've always wanted to be so naturally good at something that someone took notice, because I've always thought that that's how I could make my parents really really proud of me. But, besides doing well in school, I never did anything impressive. My secret dream has been to sing, but I never told my parents that because I didn't want to disappoint them, so I told them I was going to go to Harvard Law (I've been saying that since I was a child). One day I decided to stop trying to impress my parents, and just do what I love to do (Musical Theatre), so I auditioned for a musical and belted for the first time in front of people and they said I was a natural. I went home and cried (happy tears!). I mean, after YEARS of singing quietly in the shower, in choirs, and belting as loud as I could whenever I got everyone out of the house...it just meant A LOT. So now I've decided to follow my dreams and study musical theatre in college! My parents are pissed, but I'm so happy I think I may burst. I've never been in love, but if it's ANYTHING like the feeling that I get when I sing, I can't wait :)
Sorry, I rambled. BUT I'M JUST SO EXCITED!

I work with kids on the Autism Spectrum, and the first little guy I worked with told his mom that he was going to have a sleepover at my house (he was four, and his older sister, then seven, was spending the night at a friend's house) because "She's my friend". This was cool for two reasons: he had just begun speaking in sentences, and he had never had a friend before. I'm still in awe by the thought that I had the honor of being his first friend.

A different boss I admired saying that she wasn't looking for friends but if she was she would like someone like me.. Strangely enough, after she was no longer my boss we met up and now meet regularly for a meal and catchup.
Oh I remember another. I saw someone I thought I knew and when I realised it wasn't who I though it was I apologised. She said "I wish I was the sort of person who knows someone like you" Since then I have used that line myself. Nice to remember the nice things every now and then. I sure can remember heaps of not so flattering ones too.

I need to make it a point to say more kind things to him every day, because I have a tendency to be quite heavy on the discipline, as my father was on me.
Which, come to think of it, reminds me of another very kind thing someone said to me: A good friend once told me, "You are not your parents."

It was 1995. After loving him for 40 years and wondering why he is a person who never says the words, "I love you" to anyone (and believe me, his children noticed it most), my late husband was staring at me while I read a book. "What!?!" I asked him. He just stared, then said, "Stinky girl, I love you more than sh*t!"

He only said the words "I love you" maybe twice in his life.
As he died he said, "I love you, Sylvia!" (My name is Barbara).

I think we are genetically engineered to take that approach when injuries are not so severe as to be life or reproduction threatening. Of course, there are always some who can never forget and people who carry grudges are easier to manipulate. Do modern, ratings driven news media impede the healing process by shining their lights on those with the biggest mouths and wildest ideas?

I think walking up to an anti-war rally and having a gentleman come up to me and say, do you know you have the most beautiful aura, totally took me off guard, but spoke to my soul, spoke to the human being I've spent so many years trying to develop, work on. That and I DO love you, not I love you, but I DO love you, because do is an action verb. It resonated with me and took me a while to figure out why!
