I don't think "most films" do. "Most films" build up to an ending.

try watching Shindlers List or Ordinary people. not much in the way of "happy endings".
There is a difference between comedy and drama and melodrama. Comedies are /supposed/ to end with "happily ever after" (or at least some kind of resolution that is 'happy' to all), in a melodrama, it's pretty much up for grabs..but at least, sometimes the bad guy gets his come uppin's, in a drama/tragedy..well, nobody ends up "happy".
Most films, as most plays, today, fall into the melodrama class.

When you are in Paris about to tour the Tour de Eiffel, when you see the most beautiful girl in the world, and even against all of the times you said love at first sight was fake, you can't help yourself. As you ride up the cable car, you just stare at her, drenched in love. Then there is that heartbreak when, you lose her, without a phone number or even a name. And you walk out empty handed.
