MY heroes journey is the one where the young talented hero succumbs to the will of other people who steer him away from his dreams. He learns later he's been fooled, and believes all is lost as he is trapped in a life of mediocrity.

Then he is injured. No longer able to leap tall buildings he rediscovers his old gifts, and heads back out onto the trail where he seeks to sharpen his old skills while developing new ones. On the trail he's made new friends, and new allies who want to help him achieve his potential.

PS -- Tahirih was indeed "following her bliss" but in her case it was what mystics call ecstasy and it came from love of a divinity and a cause greater than herself -- her path was sacrifice -- both her pain and her joy were intense -- before she was assassinated she said to a friend "Remember me and rejoice in my gladness"...

We have many current day heroes who are fighting huge, deadly dragons. Among them women who try to live their own lives and become victims of "honor" killings by their own families -- because their relatives think they should be living someone else's life, and by living their own, they dishonor their kin. One of my great heroes is Tahirih, the great Iranian poetess who defied orthodox authorities in 19th Century Iran to stand before men without wearing her veil, to travel and teach her beliefs to both men and women. Her death was ultimately engineered by her outraged husband (she took the male prerogative and divorced him herself). She was the victim of an "honor" killing. Her whole aim was to try to stop the very fanaticism that still leads to such killings today.

I've been a Joseph Campbell fan for years. Read his books, watched and listened to his interviews numerous times, but never felt able to follow my own bliss until recently. I had too many obligations to others. And I had created these obligations, so who was I to make others miserable just so I could go in search of my true path? One day a few months ago I had a choice to make. All I decided was to be truthful and fair. I hadn't technically lied before that, but I'd been living a life I knew I didn't want to be in, and saying so with sarcastic cold remarks, waiting for him to understand that I meant the things I said. Maybe he understood and didn't want to acknowledge. And on that day I had to say it. Not coldly, not sarcastically, but with empathy and compassion. I don't regret that I waited so long. Sometimes maybe the greater good is more important, and we raised a beautiful family. They're strong and capable and smart, and maybe we couldn't have achieved that separately. But now I'm following my own bliss. It's changed everything in a way that even the negatives feel positive. I'm broke, but what I have is mine. He feels hurt and rejected, but I know he will find true love, and he'll understand then that he deserved it all along. He'll be rewarded spiritually for all he was missing in me, I truly believe that. I spent years trying to find myself and trying to be heard. No one else was listening, but I was. And now I'm being rewarded with my own self awareness and the knowledge that in order to slay our own dragons, all we need is the courage to raise our sword. In the words of the Mad Hatter, I'm much more muchier than I used to be. Life is never going to be simple, but honoring yourself can do more than you might believe until you try. Joseph Campbell explained that in ways that no one else could. Our modern day philosopher, if only someone could carry on his work. Then again, maybe someone is, right here every day on this website. Thanks, Rainn, for encouraging us all to think AND feel.

But seriously, the world would be a better place if more people were willing to jump in with both feet, listen to the wizard in the forest and face the dragon.

I was certainly intrigued by the Bill Moyers interviews with Joseph Campbell. Is life as simple as "follow your bliss"? It may be...but it seems that if you are struggling just to survive, you may not have that luxury. Not sure...

I remember watching the POWER OF MYTH interview with Bill Moyers. Campbell was saying things I had always felt, but had never been able to articulate for myself. It was a powerful experience. A moment of tremendous insight and clarity that has been with me ever since. “Follow your bliss” is sage advice. For me life’s journey must follow a path of kindness---kindness to myself and most importantly kindness to others.

I've read a lot of Joseph Campbell. The heroes journey requires that the parents die. I like my parents so I will not be participating in any such journey.

I guess it's full circle, I bought one of his books for an 18 year old and went to the Mona foundation show, you signed the book for her and asked if I was familar with Soulpancake. As to my heroes journey, I couldn't even begin to tell you, because I'm still on it!

take your imagination as far as it will go and come back, repeat as many times as you wish. take a spaceship as far into the cosmos as it will go and come back. discover all you can and when you come back home what will it mean without having shared those fantasies, dreams, travels, discoveries, and successes without others?
life is about people. faith in god and purpose is beautiful, it defines us, but people are visible, touchable, glorious in all our forms and beliefs. commonalities outweigh difference. everyone deserves happiness... happiness is an individual, unique, magical formula. let it flow. be an ally, not a cynic.
Raise others and see yourself raised. there's no such thing as selflessness... take part in the glory of human exchange. attempting to lower another in hopes of raising yourself is weak. integrate the abundance paradigm and raise us all. share your story with others and find interest in hearing theirs. everyone has a story. =)
thanks, Rainn!

Ah yes, I'm looking forward seeing the movie. :) After reading The Hero with a thousand faces Joseph quickly became a sort of mentor for me. His work had a big impact on my artistic journey... On my whole life really. I am very grateful for it.

My heroes journey? I guess right now it's about finding my place in this world. I feel like I'm standing on a crossroad. I'm not to sure were to go anymore, but it's ok. In a way i was hoping for all this knowledge to give me a clear path to follow, but to quote Joseph ' “If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it's not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That's why it's your path.”
So, we'll see. :P I'm just gonna keep on following my bliss!

Joseph's life would be my dream.
Coming up in the twenties, hanging out in Carmel with Stienbeck, living in Paris in it's heyday, landing a job at the all girls Sarah Lawrence, taking sabbaticals all over Asia and Europe, dining with Jung and the Dali Lama.
His whole life was bliss if you ask me.

A guy that, yeah, maybe hasn't had the easiest life ever, and maybe he's gotten bullied beyond belief, but he takes those experiences and absorbs them to spread the idea of love. Everyone deserves it, even his worst enemies. He's learning to forgive and smile on everyone, showing equality, humility, and love.
