I don't take these lyrics literally. Imagination is the key to life. We need creativity and imagination to build better lives, communities, families, relationships, the world. Without imagination, without using our minds, where would we all be?

Who knows for sure? I just love imagining it and nothing bad can come of all the good in that particular imagination in my book!

I love that I just stumbled on this question because I'm rocking my JL shirt right now and his Imagine poster with these lyrics are on the wall to my right. I think that these lyrics are not at all naive but idealistic and it's not for everyone to 'Imagine' such radical ideas being put to fruition. I am a rare breed because I would rather live in a primitive world and enjoy simple pleasures than live in this one where everything is at our disposal yet nothing is enough to make us happy.

It would be impossible to achieve what he envisioned in that song for many reasons. My understanding it that is in itself the purpose of the song, a statement of what cannot be.

I think some people ARE living for today, some people ARE imagining no Heaven and no Hell. Some people do think they are invincible. Consequences aren't always thought out. No accountability is recognized. And I think that's the problem. The words sound nice, but in reality, it's a mess. A lonely, isolated, empty mess.

the ego, fear, and clash in opinions all get in the way... but 'if' there were none of that... imagine what the world would be like

I think it's ridiculous to try to interpret the song as a literal suggestion. The song is called "IMAGINE" - I think the idea is to inspire people to open their minds and imagine new ways of thinking, to question and re-examine the very building blocks of a society that's struggling to function.

I think John knew it this kind of world wasn't achievable, but he asked us to consider "why not?"

There's a reason the song is called "imagine".

Those things can never be coexisting because human's aren't perfect. we misunderstand each other and are selfish sometimes. That's why the song's called "imagine"

Its a beautiful song. However I feel it's wishful thinking. Human beings are evil, always have been, and I think we will kill our planet and ourselves, before the chance of change.

I dont think Lennon's song was naive. He saw the best in people and believed in the potential mankind could reach. I also think it is human nature to be greedy, have hatred, and have fear. This song should inspire us to turn away from these "evils" and create a better tmrw

No countries, religion, possessions, or hunger is a nice idea. This isn't achievable on a large scale though. It's just like communism. It could work in small environments, but would never succeed largely because there will always be corruption as long as there are humans.

I think this song is a testament, along with his relationship with Yoko, as to how powerful a drug heroin is. I have had the same feelings of peace lately when I've been doped up on morphine for my current illness.

Lennon's better work was with the Beatles. As for his solo/ post beatles work, I grew up with "Instant Karma", I remember my dad playing it on 8 track in his Chevette. "Working Class Hero" is great (Green Day actually does a mean cover of it). I think these are better tunes than "Imagine", though "Imagine" gets alot of attention because of the message, which is totally unrealistic... unless you're high on the white pony; then its doable, and so is Yoko Ono.

What I found interesting about Lennon and the other Beatles is that they sang songs about unity and world wide benevolence yet they were unable to keep their own house together.

Although that doesn't keep me from appreciating their music.

In a way, yes. All of our religions and different cars, clothes, money etc are the very things that divide us. If we were to stop trying to look toward the future to beat the next guy there, we could build something very special.

It is not a reasonable expectation of the world. John Lennon wrote that song when he was high on drugs.

His song Watching the Wheels to me is a better song. Stop trying to enlighten me as I am a happy man just watching the wheels go round and round.

I think it's a dream worth having but unfortunately we are human which means we are fallible so there will always be deliberate ignorance, fear, greed and hatred.

it says:
"I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you"
and it also says:
"Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money?"
so true..

I don't like this songs because it talks about some perfect, Unreachable world, instead of talking about how we can change THIS world into a better place. because we can not Cancel all the countries, religions, etc. but there might be some rational things we can do.

There is the possibility that it is naive as well as the possibility that it could be achievable, but as long as people find motivation through self, through an understanding that more is better, I think it will be an elusive target.
