Not that I advocate this behaviour in any way...

For much of human history in most cultures, humans have seen other living things as one of three catagories; 1 useful, 2 irrelevant, and 3 threatening.

Of those in the first catagory, we have two sub catagories, A. Tool, B. neurosishing.
In 1a, we have dogs which coevolved with humans as hunting and guarding tools (ocaisionally food) and cats which we use to guard grain against pests. Also oxen for plowing, and other large animals. We continue to keep cats dogs and birds (rarely others) as pets, because of their relative lack of need for a large range and their relatively small size, and traneability.
We rarely keep animals in 1b as pets, mostly only hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits, thought many no longer consider those food in the very developed world.

Take the example and apply it to humans, not all humans are treated equal. And truthfully speaking not all humans are equal.

It is food because we eat it. It is special because we feel guilt for eating it. It, essentially, is us.

Living on a farm I have come to learn that different animals have different uses. Some for food such as cows, pigs, chickens and sheep. We have a dog but he is a working dog so he is not entirely a pet although we do treat him like one. Then we keep horses as working animals as well.

I don't think it's wrong as we look after all the animals with the best of care but unfortunately we have to send them to the slaughterhouse in order to survive and they taste extra good when they're looked after as good as we look after them.

I think it is more a cultural thing. Animals that we keep as pets are a food staple in other countries.
