Seems better than bullets. Downside -- If it works out as well as tasers, the government (or presumably, whomever is sold the technology) can be a lot less discriminating in its use of force -- this could lead to some serious abuse.

Possible up/down side -- is this the new electric fence?
Having said that, I'd like to volunteer to get a little heat ray action, just so I know exactly what this means.

Hey, I saw a demonstration of this thing and it's actually a lot more humane than it sounds. Instead of bullets and more lethal means of breaking up an unruly crowd, foreign or domestic, it can be more effective. When law enforcement goes into a crowd, it's very dangerous for the officers. Confronting a crowd in riot gear is very personal and is more likely to inflame the crowd to escalate whatever they're doing. This thing can be operated from a distance and is LESS likely to incite further violence. And, it doesn't actually "cook" anyone. Yes, it's a microwave, but a whole different type.

The impression is that some protesters AND protests can certainly be half-baked! This might help them unto being "well done"!

Frustration can certainly give drive to the quest for change. The line is crossed, imho, when it becomes mostly about frustration and this gives way so easily to destructive civil disobedience.
The police just enforce the laws that exist and try to keep the peace between the different factions of society. Striking at them is a futile gesture. As is striking against the society that grants the "rights" that allow for peaceful demonstrations. Or the shop owners who contribute to that society?
The main realizers of positive gain in protests-gone-wrong, are the monstrous insurance companies!

Well thank God, despite the bad economy, we're still able to invest tax dollars on ways to torture people.
