Does religion need to be destroyed for spirituality to flourish?

I read an interesting metaphor: "No place is a place for religious debates... why? Because it's 2012, let's leave the bronze age literature to itself, it's played a very important role in the development of our civilization, but like the booster of a rocket into space, it's time to let it go so we can advance into the future." The writer I believe was actually referring to flourishing in science, so let me rephrase a bit: 'Does religion need to be forgotten so that spirituality, science, art, and the human condition may be improved?' Thoughts?
