Largely subjective. From my own experience, I can tell you that pizza (pizzeria pizza, not Pizza Hut ot Dominos) outside of NY area is sub par. Pizza from Brooklyn is by far the best pizza you can get in the entire world. Trust me. I'm an expert.

A small caveat- theres other styles of pizza, the one I think most people would know is "deep dish" style, which is out of Chicago, and is very good from what I understand (I've never been there, but I've been to an Uno and if I'm sure its even better at a small joint in the windy city).

There's this pizza place off Freret st. that makes authentic pizzas. I wandered in there drunk one night and asked them what that meant and they had an actual answer for me. According to the association of pizzazi europoli there are rules you must follow in order to be considered authentic. Here's a link.

In cooking it's the method by which a dish was first originally made, with ingredients from the region where it was first prepared. In human beings, it is someone who is truly really quintessentially themselves and not pretending to be someone else.

this rules out an enormous number of "things & stuff"
but as melb2 points out in her lovely straightforward way -
there are some things that are certified as being unique to an area, or a method of production, or a certain creator...
an authentic Van Gogh has to have been painted by him
and authentic Rolls Royce has to have been manufactured by the Rolls Royce company
and authentic champagne has to have been made from grapes, and bottled, in the regions of Epernay or Reims.
you cannot do an authentic fart - or they are all authentic...

apparently an "authentic" Neopolitian pizza has to meet certain guidelines set down by some certifying organization.

"Authenticity" to me, means "no fallacy". Nothing false.

A noble goal in one's life, but still one we have to daily reach for.
With your pizza? Authenticity is perhaps of less concern. You eat it in and crap it out! But for consideration: is the chef a genuine Italian chef? Is the recipe from "the old country"? Are the toppings fresh or canned? It is "artificially" enhanced (MSG's etc)?
And how much will these things matter in the taking-in and the crapping-out?!
Physical benefits, or purely psychological benefits? Not really that "pressing" a concern.
Not nearly so much as say, whether one choose to reach for an authenticity of self -- an integrity, a genuineness.

I think that authenticity is to be true to the spirit.

What is the spirit of pizza? To provide the most fantastic experience of culinary joy though the combination of bread baked fast in high heat and topped with anything that makes you say, Mmmmmmmmmmm!
What is the spirit of an authentic person? One who consistently provides inspiration through the expression of their sincerity in all things.
The cool thing about authentic is that it doesn't all have to be the same. It's the spirit of truth that counts. Not the concrete facts.
I wonder why I like that word so much? I like reading it, hearing it and saying it. Authentic. AUTHENTIC! Ok...my day is made. Thanks Snoopy!

Take you pizza for example, the great thing about pizza is we can put just about any topping we like on it, it really is limitless, but if we were to use Sushi for example as a topping then it would not be considered authentc . And this holds true for any other foods, merchandise, or person.
I agree with Snoopy315, that something can be uniquely authentic to us such as their Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich, what kind of bread or jelly used etc. but it is well intended as to the use of the basic ingredients and concept, however Nutella, as delicious as that is, if subsituted for the Peanut Butter, would not be considered authentic.
Same goes for an authentc person, one who stays true to one's self and others, sincere, well intended and truthful, or can be as fake as a replica of a Gucci hand bag, which with a trained eye, one can usually tell the difference of the authenticity.
