I think EVERYONE needs regular driver testing. It'd be foolish to think that only senior citizens can have their driver talents eroded or all but destroyed by physical or mental health conditions.

For sure. Mom in law just had to do a written and road test at 89. She was totally shocked that she passed and only really went because she likes to meet new people. She is actually a pretty good driver and she pretty well only keeps a car for emergencies but she showed up the other day to our immense surprise through a snow storm that called for a travel advisory. We were getting our boots on to pick her up when she pulled into the driveway after a one hour drive.

Side warning to Griz, next time you visit your sister in law, beware of a light purple Camry with a vicious shitzu riding shotgun.

I think anyone who shows that they cannot safely operate a motor vehicle should require more frequent testing. This includes older people who's medical providers think they may have disabilities that prevent them from safely driving, convicted drunk drivers and those people who are issued tickets for reckless/careless driving. I do agree that many elderly people cannot safely drive, but I also think it is not just limited to them.

just persuaded my mother to voluntarily stop at age 86 though - she may have passed her last test but she isn't safe - and she accepted that she wasn't.
It's not nice though, losing that particular freedom tool...

Actually, yes I do. Our vision changes and all sorts of things: reflexes slow, disabilities, health, etc.
When I renewed my driver's license, they would have done nothing differently had they not seen my cane and the fact I was using it for my right side, the important leg. I had to take a driver's test for that.

http://www.iihs.org/laws/olderdrivers.aspx They are required to in about half the states in the US. It's unfortunate, but sometimes you need to insist that an older relative take a driving test or stop driving. My parents and in-laws resisted. Father-in-law was in accident and then failed mandatory test. We had to hide the car from mother-in-law with Alzheimer's. My mother's car's been sitting idle for months, because we don't want to take away her hope that she can drive again, which would probably be a bad idea.

I think everyone should have to take a driving test every time they renew their license. The guy that almost ran into me today looked to be invisible late tarries to early thirties.
