The former we will never know and can only speculate about because the latter was created for the benefit of the rulers and regional power mongers of the Roman Empire.

Of course there are infinite religions and all are divisive and division is the seed of violence.

when man creates the name/label into an idol,. a golden calf ... religions come into form through the labels/names,.. via man, as a creator himself.. in the image of the creator before him..and further, .man has the availability to change his own image any moment he chooses..many call this availability free will...religion s are manifestations of mankind's ,own ideals surrounding their chosen messenger.

Jesus was here to refresh the ceaseless religion of all time.
Jesus was the second Buddha.
Since Jesus' time, there have been three more Buddhas - fulfilling the prophecy for Maitreya Buddha.

Jesus is one of many God-sent Divine Messengers in many different religions, and was the founder of only one of them, Christianity. "Religion" is thus a far more generic term.

Jesus is the Bridegroom. We, the church, are his bride. It IS relationship, and not about rules and regulations. To separate one from the other in to denigrate both.

When I read what was offered about Jesus and by Jesus I see that he was not seeking to start a religion ABOUT God . . . but to set the groundwork necessary to re-establish relationship WITH God.

A relationship is its own "proof" to everyone involved AND even to close by-standers.
Religions are what we Humans construct trying to provide to ourselves or others, "the proof" that there is relationship (meaning on some level, we doubt it?).
Religions are the game, the facade, the buying flowers and chocolates trying to verify or prove or "earn" what we in our heart know is lacking.
Whereas people in true relationship do these same things . . . but 100%, their motivating is simply to see the other smile! The relationship doesn't need proving or propping up, so energy is folded back into the blessings of the relationship rather than into trying to prove it's actually there.

Jesus was just talkin' about living a good life so people are all like "yay... Jesus...! " Then religion comes along and steals Jesus and all his decent philosophies and turns decent humans into superstitious sub-human animals. =)

Jesus represents Christianity.. religion has more to do with spirituality and moral values. The average person will correlate religion with Christianity and are unaware that religion can be any collection of your own views or beliefs.

Jesus may (or may not) have been the historical figure around which an extension of a preexisting religion was repackaged and sold. From what I can gather, if he did live, and did take the moral stances he is purported to have taken, he would have disagreed entirely with how the religion was sold after his death, and even more with how it is currently being used by, well... Just about everybody.

Jesus was the being.
Religion was the system of laws/rules made up by people after his death as a method of worshipping and honouring him. At least, that's the theory.
Jesus, the being, said not to pray in public or amongst others but instead go to your closet and shut the door - to do otherwise would make you a hypocrite. (Matthew 6:5, 6:6)
The religion that is in his name ignores this and tells people to pray in church and in public.
Jesus was an enlightened man, a teacher, an incredible being.
Religion is the bureaucracy between us and Jesus that Jesus said he didn't want.
So what's the difference between Jesus and religion? Only everything.
