as a person with adhd myself, i would recomend a book i read called "driven to distraction" written by a phychiatrist with adhd. First of all, good job for noticing. secondly, personally, i think the medicine route is a fail. It changes a very healthy robust brain into a boring one like everyone elses.

O) Give your child good lessons in logical reasoning. Never say "because i say so". Do not be afraid to challenge your childs intellect to the very last drop. I cannot accomplish anything unless i know why i am doing it and where it is getting me and where its coming from and who made it up. Inside my brain is a billion connections from and to everything i want to do see read taste smell touch and everything i have already and what that means to me. Help them be able to deduce that ao they can use their jedi powers for good
O) Find a really good balance between changing tasks and holding onto tasks (pairs with logical reasoning). "why do you want to quit football, sxophone, drawing, mathletes, your friend libby, homework, clothes? do you think you could try it for a little longer and see how you feel after that?
O) watch out for punk a*s teachers...i had like 3 including 3rd grade MRS CAROVANO who told my mom i was worthless and would amount to nothing.
I had more but i'm bored now. your kid is a badass. They will do everything that you can convince them is awesome. make everything awesome....especially broccoli and jazz

Don't let the presenting symptoms have them or you thinking or treating them like they're not smart. ADHD children are quite smart. They just have trouble fitting in with the structures that school and home-life sometimes demand.

Find what they excel at, what speaks to them, what they get into -- and do that with them.
Try to resist the process whereby the condition becomes a crutch or an excuse for either misbehaving or not doing as well as they can. Being "afflicted" can become a justification for laziness or acting out. Make sure they know you still have high expectations of them despite their having a harder time with some things.
It's not that they're dumb.
They just learn differently.

Go on nature walks with the child. Find a non plastic walking stick. Nature will ground the child. Tree hugging works best but go climbing a tree works too. Bare feet in the grass or in the sand. Tell stories/make up stories by the water, under a shade tree or by a fire at night.

Before putting your child on adhd drugs you should research how many people get addicted to it, how Adderal and the other drugs kill children

do all that stuff burnabymike said. Check with your local health department (no I'm not saying get meds) top see if there is a local ADHD caregiver's support group. I realize that taking care of anybody with a mental or physical condition will wear a person right out.

This is only my opinion. I am not a doctor, I don't play one on TV and I did not stay at a holiday inn.

Review and make lifestyle changes first! I am amazed how many kids are put on medications immediately without modifying diet and/or environment. Often the behavior is directly tied to diet and a lack of proper exercise. Cut out all caffeine, limit sugar dramatically (keeping in mind most packaged/processed foods have sugar), get back to feeding whole foods (no junk, soda or fast food) and increase the child's activity. A long, fast paced walk together daily will help 2 fold. You'll both benefit physically and you'll have quality "talk" time which is needed.
Many kids w/ADHD need/seek/crave attention and to be heard.
Also don't make or allow this diagnosis become a crutch or an excuse for you or the kid.
This "behavior" has been given the official title of "disease" because if it wasn't a "disease" medications and therapy could not be created and charged big bucks for.
Lastly be kind and patient with yourself. I wish you success!
