I've occasionally looked into the notion of moving to Canada. National healthcare and Timbits sound wonderful, I'd need to learn a bit more about their government, and Canada wouldn't want me anyway ask have no particular skills or degrees, so it's currently moot ;P

Hell yes. I`d live in Toronto anytime. I dont need heat (hate to sweat) and the healthcare is fab. Crime is lower. Prejudice and racial problems are less too. (All in comparison to America)

I would consider Montreal too except for the too long winters there.Too cold.
I like the european influence too.
Toronto is very mulit-culti. A fond memory I have of Toronto was in a mall --- at a cookie stand were 3 kids working behind the counter: a white kid a black kid and an asian one all joking around with each other.
It seems to me that Canadians are happier. Who wouldnt be knwoing that their health will be cared for in a pinch. That kind of security would make anybody sleep well.

I'm with BurnabyMike on that - and not just saying that because I think he lives near me. CANADA! Beautiful by nature.

Speaking (writing?) as a Canadian I can perhaps help people a bit with this. It depends on where you're living now and what part of Canada you're comparing it to.

Okay, yes, the scenery is beautiful, the cities are livable and generally friendly, the people are mostly friendly, and our political system - flawed and embarrassing as it is - actually works in that we don't have gridlock and our elections are over in one day.
The down side of Canada is most of the country has cold, snowy winters (think Minnesota) except Vancouver which gets 8 months of rain (see the first 5 season of the X-files - you never saw the sun because it was filmed in Vancouver.) The government gets things done, but largely because we basically elect a benevolant dictator for 4-5 year terms. An appointed unelected Senate is supposed to keep the government honest but guess who appoints senators? (See: benevolant dictator)
Canada is not gun-obsessed, however, and we have the most stable banking system in the world.
Michael J. Fox and Michael Buble both grew up in the Vancouver area and Canada gave the world Alexander Graham Bell, Raymond Burr, Jim Carrey, Alan Thicke, William Shatner, Bryan Adams, and Shannon Tweed. Sadly, we're also responsible for Celine Dion, Tom Green and Justin Bieber. We apologize for that.
On the other hand, we did NOT give the world Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, the cast of Jersey Shore and the Kardashians, so let's call it even.
With tongue firmly planted in cheek, goodnight! (Eh?)

I love Canada, it's a beautiful wonderful country with a fair government (in most cases) and opportunities for everyone. It's also, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful place in the entire world.

Used to think Vancouver was appealing. Then I saw a show about earthquakes on PBS. The Pacific NW including BC is a ticking time bomb due to one plate going under another(subduction). The worst case scenario. Could happen anytime and absolutely will happen within the next 200 years, they say. One small town(1000) built a tsunami proof townhall on specially designed stilts. They figure they would have time to get most of the people up there before the waves hit.

I've lived in Canada for most of my life. I've had opportunities to move elsewhere, but I really don't see myself ever living anywhere else.

Material items can be more expensive...houses, cars, food, clothes....and yes, even books. Taxes are higher, depending on your income bracket. Medical - doesn't break the bank if you don't carry supplemental coverage. The beer is sooooo much better.

climate is very similar to that of the northern states that border it...it only snows/freezes in the winter :) and not really on the west coast all that much. And that's what makes it fabulous!
Beautiful country, beautiful people....not a lot unlike the US...(few exceptions)
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else .... have, but will never leave again.
