Empathy; if you don't understand what they're going through or try to you'll never be able to help them. Love; the real stuff, not the situational or conditional kind. Encouragement; because everybody needs it and the ones who say they're fine or great are worse off anyway.

Someone being thoughtful from the heart....not for the sake of return expectations. (and yes, it does feel different) When someone genuinely is a giving person it warms my heart, and in turn, I tend to make an effort to warm others the same way.

Adversity?
I'm thinking of the various natural disasters we've heard of where random anonymous people step up for great acts of kindness and compassion, concern empathy and reaching out. Sometimes to disappear back into the crowd just as anonymously.
So one might ask, "What about all the people we hear about robbing and looting and raping and gouging and doing all kinds of heinous things?".
Maybe that's just "the best" they have in them?
