I'll tell the person that I don't need to hear all that and suggest we pretend that I never did. Then if the person never has anything more interesting to discuss, I'll start ignoring that person.

My wife obsesses over her cousin's dramatic life, as if it is her personal duty to change it or steer her the "right" way. I say live and let live. She can live as fucked up of a life as she chooses.

I accidentally found a cure for it. One such person was going on about this, that and the other thing and - not being in the most helpful mood - I nodded "Ah," then waved my hand dismissively, "drama."

I felt a bit guilty about that but realized later that I don't get drama from that perosn any more. As soon as you summarize their "soap opera" life with a dismissive wave and label it as "drama" it puts them off. :-)

Yeah, sadly, my little daughter is that way. She is forty. I try and stay away from her lest I become one of those characters that gets embroiled in adultery and then is killed off.

I know lots of people and I love to listen to them because as a writer, it's endless source material!

I just listen to their latest saga and enjoy that person for what they are to me.
