I'm offended that we have an endless supply of information, an endless source of news and the means to communicate our opinions to millions at our fingertips and the majority of the people use it to watch porn or look at pictures of cats wishing they had... sorry, has cheeseburgers.

I rarely get offended, even when someone is trying to offend me! However, I get deeply offended and actually angry when someone feels that they deserve special treatment because they are somehow more important than someone else. I hate pushiness and feelings of entitlement. I work in a financial institution that prides itself in treating all members with dignity and respect, so people who think their transactions are more important than everyone else's rub me the wrong way!

I find myself very offended by stereotypes. So what I'm from Australia, that doesn't mean I wrestle crocodiles of have been attacked by a shark. It also doesn't mean I say things like "G'day" etc. But I'm even more offended by people who give into these stereotypes, because that only encourages people's belief that everyone from the same area, race or creed is the same in their thoughts and actions.

I agree the use of the words "retarded" and "gay" as derogatory adjectives are inherently offensive to the human spirit, as well as the N word or using "Ho" or the B word to describe any woman in popular culture. Words or actions that degrade any one of us degrade all of us. Aren't we really saying that it's the bullying behavior and attitude that is offensive? But trying to collectively stop it only creates a backlash. I think you can only lead by example. And I wish that didn't seem so weak.

I'm rarely offended, but when I am it is because someone has made a conscious effort to do wrong to me. What I like to call "Crapping in my corn flakes." Then, I'm pissed.

Well I sure opened a can of worms with this question! ;) But it's been incredibly interesting to read everyone's discussions on this, and I appreciate how open and honest people have been.

It`s not being "offended"- but I have been hurt by hyprocrisy before, so I would say that hypocrits are like my pet peeve. It makes me angry more than offended. I was just wondering how getting rid of the word is going to get rid of the feelings? It seems to me that this isnt getting to the root of the matter. What is the root of the matter? That person`s own fear of being stupid him/herself! It`s a projection of sorts. But I admit its a lot easier to get rid of the word than for someone to learn to feel comfortable and loving with who they are. When they can do that, then they can love people who are retarded too.

I'm of(fend)ed when someone exposes or tries to harm what I am de(fend)ing. It is an instinct of protection. Though being offended is not always a bad thing, in fact, in the long run it can be very helpful as it reveals what one is guarding (ideology, ego, loved ones, property, freedoms, etc). The problem with offending and defending is their root: fend, which is to 'fight or spar for survival.' When we no longer feel that fighting is necessary to survive, when our actions aren't driven by being 'on guard,' then maybe both these words will both become obsolete.

You said petition, which is WAY different than a personal pledge. I thoroughly read all of your posts, and that's great that you care about your brother, and it's fine to be offended by the use of a word. But when you said petition, it implied an actual movement to influence public policy. You just got unnecessarily defensive at my originally fairly bland post.

Not much. Ignorance, assholery, the punk kids who yelled "f**s" at a couple on a motorcycle today. I've been guilty of saying "that's gay" or "dont be gay" but I am genuinely offended at the conviction some people have for intolerance. I'm also offended when people try to soften our language...making it convoluted and indirect. Call a spade a spade.
