I think the feelings or the attractions happen on levels that we have little conscious control over. Conscious control comes as with all feelings, in what we choose to do with those feelings or attractions.

I've heard various "experts" say that most people feel some attraction towards the same sex at some point in their life. I think what makes someone gay, is in the choice to make those attractions and feelings the paramount identifying factor in most or all aspects of their life public and private.
And in the same way, what makes someone homophobic is to take as their paramount identity, the denial that they themselves have felt this way at some point in their life.
(Making the two issues flip-sides of the same coin? Reverse-manifestations of the same underlying issue?)

I think humans are "gay" for the same reasons some animals are "gay".

homosexuality is not a "new" human phenomena.
whether is nuture or nature doesn't make one damn bit of difference.

Until the gene has been pinpointed on which the "gay trait" lies- I would say no - it is not genetic.

Lots can happen between the earth and the sky to make a person tend one way or the other. Truth be told though that when one has felt gay, that often affects the amounts of hormones one secretes. Just in case one wonders why somebody who is gay might appear physically more feminine as well. (Similarly to the way being very upset can make a woman skip a period.) So a guy who is gay might not end up secreting as much testosterone as a hetero guy. At any age, this can also affect physical features.
The thing that really made me think a lot deeper was a TV program in France. A couple was interviewed who had an 18 year old transsexual son. They actually broke down and cried about a baby girl they had 20 years ago who died. The therapist interviewing them actually said that their unfinished, undelying grief for the death of their daughter influenced their son. An awful lot of messages are transmitted on a subconscious level between parents and children. I also read that a therapist cheated on his wife for the first time one afternoon, and he went home for dinner and behaved as he usually did. That night.- all 3 of his kids had nightmares. Many many messages are transmitted nonverbally as well and these can be powerful messages. Maybe the child noticed that Dad didnt look them in the eye. Maybe his body posture gave off a different stance.
So like I said- there is a lot going on between heaven and earth that we dont even know is HAPPENING. Sexual abuse can create a homosexual- that is known. A girl who was raped by her father can become a lesbian. A boy who was treated harshly by his father can become a homosexual. But what about all those things we didnt remember? We didnt consciously experience but happened all the same? What about all that subliminal stuff that is going on while we grow up that we couldnt put our finger on consciously and say "that is what influenced me to become the person I am today" even in a non-sexual way?
So no simple answer to this question.

Google "sexual antagonistic selection." Basically, if your grandmother had a lot of babies it increases a male's chances of being born gay. As for lesbian women I'm not sure, but they made some headway on that mystery with lab rats.

I'm just speculating, but i'd imagine that in a society where there were no social mores or taboos in regards to sexual orientation the average person would be bisexual. I, as a man, am not attracted to other men, but i must wonder if that is because of biology or because society has told us that men shouldn't be attracted to other men.

Why in this society would one choose to be "GAY". I have many gay friends. And my heart goes out to them.... They have struggled with this for years. Have suffered forever. And maybe at 20. 30 .40 they have been able to come out...Is it Genetic....My feeling is yes..... Is it wrong???? Who knows??? But I see the the life altering affects it has had on their lives. SO Is it a choice???? There pain it so... All they want is to be "NORMAL" and who are we to say what is "normal"

One of my sons was gay from babyhood. The other gay son is gay by choice. Men are less "drama" and he hates "drama". Maybe he is bi. He would go straight for the right Vietnamese or Chinese lady. I don't care either way he wants to be.

I'm kidding.....it comes in jars of Gerber baby food. The bright green peas your mum makes you eat as a litttle punk.

From what I've read it isn't genetic, but it is biological. This is to say, there is no specific "gay gene" but the factors that cause someone to be gay are biological and natural, and therefore not under their control. In short, it is not a choice.

Of course, in my opinion, it shouldn't make any difference why people are gay, they're still people.

ok, i think God (the Divine-- whatever you call him/her/it) will judge you on who you are, not who you slept with...you're perfect just the way you are... :)

I don't think the reason really matters, personally. Wether it's genetic or not, it IS natural.

According to neuroscience and geneticists, there is no gene for homosexuality. The same can be said for things such as intelligence and prejudice. Those who study these things are typically aligned behind the notion that environment (phenotype) has far more to do with an individuals sexual preference than do genetics (genotype).

God - God created Humans in a way that Man would be Dependent on woman, and vise versa. And I think "gay" is just an illusion, (sorry if I offend you). Society is messed up, and curious. Maybe gays were started because of curiosity? But really, It's not actually normal. Because we were meant to reproduce, and expand, and bloom as beautiful beings. Then again, you could look at this technically, and say there is no black or white, good or bad, there is gray. How do we know we are supposed to reproduce?
Overall, in my overlook GAY is an illusion that needs to be realized. Its not some sort of horrible thing, but it isn't "normal"

There's mounds of evidence that sexuality is very much genetic. For example, the chances of twins being both gay is ridiculously above the chances of two unrelated men being gay. If memory serves, it's about a 60-70 percent chance for twins compared to the normal rate of I think around 11% (last I heard.)
