My Anatomy and Physiology teacher in college (2009) was amazing. He was voted part-time teacher of the year several times in a row. His exams were hard but always fair. He was funny and creative but none of that would matter if the knowledge base wasn't so staggering. He told me that his secret was he is able to shrink himself mentally and put himself inside the human body and describe what is happening all around. He gave us 11 minute breaks and if you were not in your seat after 11 minutes he started talking anyway, no grudges, it was just time to start again.. Everyone was in their seat, not out of fear but out of earned respect. 11 minutes! That still makes me smile inside. Who gives 11 minute breaks on the planet?? I'd gamble only one guy.

He tried to get FT status many times. It just was amazing that he never was accepted and eventually was snagged by a smaller college he also was PT at. What a loss. To me, it was like the Beatles getting rejected if they looked for a new record company around 1965. It seemed impossible.
He turned us on to many inspirational people in a slide show on the last day of lecture. Many of which I've shared here and in other outlets. When you find someone who vibrates at everyone's frequency like he does, it's life changing.

2 teachers impressed me in different ways - 1 teacher left a very strong positive impression on me by visiting my home & teaching me as a kid when I was recuperating from major orthopedic surgery. She even sent me souvenirs when she went to Japan & Alaska shortly after.

The other teacher that left an impression on me was her replacement several years later. She was younger, " hipper ", etc., & WAS AS CRAZY AS BATS**T. She picked the students she liked ( Classic " teacher's pets " ) & did her damndest to make the un - chosen feel inferior & like crap. She was an example of how NOT to teach.
Amazing what we remember after 25 years.

My sixth grade English teacher encouraged me to write by asking me to keep writing journal after she'd made an example of one of my creative writing projects by reading it out loud to the class. She was the first person who encouraged me to believe in myself and my abilities.

I have a pic of my favorite kid. No matter what, he always smiled. Not the brightest bulb, but a bright bulb...if you get what I mean. After I left that school, he went to work for the county election board. One day, his heart exploded in his chest.

Some of the ones I didn't realize at the time simply had a poster or two that would make sense later. For example, my 9th grade history teacher had a poster saying, "save the humans." I have fruitlessly searched for one since I woke up one day in college. My third grade teacher had us sing "I hate waking up in the morning" every day. In retrospect, it was amazing. One was a complete pushover that took us outside almost every time there was a sunny day, played guitar, and hosted philosophy club. It was great. Another teacher was good at his job, but was so ragingly insecure (I think) that he came off as insincere and inconsiderate when he was trying to manage the classroom.

The best teachers I've had have all been wonderfully human--they listened, they respected my intelligence, and they communicated what they couldn't do for us when there was a line.
The best homework assignment I ever had: here is an idea--think about it. Have feedback on it tomorrow.
Math teachers always pissed me off because of their rigidity and single-sightedness, yet they often taught some of the most important material for me to learn.
It's easy for teachers that focus on numbers and not people and their growth and expression of ideas to become as*hole that hinder development instead of promoting it. Yet, gradeless education might not work so well.

I didnt go to school. To young me, teachers were just guards, there to keep the sheep in line. I did a grand total of 13 days and then told my Dad that if I ever had to go again, I would burn the place down first. We moved on and I managed to avoid the sight of a school gate until I was old enough to bugger off and make my own way.

I think there is a difference between good teachers and efficient ones. It isnt about the method. It is all about knowing how to deal with people as individuals. This is an atrociously rare skill among the learned.

It was driver's ed class and he said to make a left --- a hard left. My left turn was so hard it was almost a u-turn and I accelerated and drove up the curb and into the window of a flower shop.
When he got out of the hospital, Coach Levi just gave me a "look" from under his head bandage.

All my students leave an impression on me. Even if I can't remember their names, the time with them in class helps me to change and improve my teaching. Every once in awhile something will stand out. I had one student - he was in my history class three years in a row because he kept failing, but one year he was in my English class. We were doing silent reading and he didn't have a book. I gave him a copy of The Hobbit to read, and he just came alive. He had never found a book that he liked, and I was able to show him something he loved. It was a great feeling. I was so upset when he was expelled.

On the other hand, I've had a number of students contact me recently to let me know that something I did had affected them in a positive way. Again, it was small things that I didn't think twice about at the time, but it mattered to them. The lesson for me is that it all matters.

I think it was my sophmore year, but my teacher let me sleep at her house for a night. I didn't wanna go to my foster home 'cause I hated it and I didn't wanna stay at my homegirl's house 'cause I didn't wanna be a bother. So I just stayed at school and I was gonna take a nap in the bathroom LOL. And I did I just layed my bag down on the floor and I just layed there and fell asleep, then my teacher walked in and she got scared 'cause she thought I was on drugs, then she asked if I had a place to stay and yada-yada-yada. I don't even think you're legally allowed to have a student sleep over at your pad.

But she did and it was awesome. She got me caught up on my homework, Gotta real good meal. Then that following morning she took me to Micky d's for breakfast and I had McDonald's coffee for the 1st time. Then everyday after school we would talk and she would help me on work. I almost got on the right path. But then she told me something that pissed me off and I started hating her LOL.

Unfortunately I'll have to say no. I've thought long and hard on this before and was/am unable to think of a single teacher I've ever had that made an impression on me...in a positive way, that is. I do however think there are some great teachers out there somewhere.

Just about everyone at the school who took his class listed him as a favorite. He deserved that too. He even helped me to go on an out-of-state trip when I wasn't able to meet the payment deadline.

Mrs. O'Dell --- teacher from hell. Boy-oh-boy was she strict! She told us that the things we learn today will be with us the rest of our lives. She said it was important to learn pi. (Oh, yeah, how many times do I need to know pi in my adult life?)

But -- Mrs. O'Dell --- crazy as hell! She once said (in 1957) that the Univac computer that took up a whole room, would someday fit on a desk, or be small enough to carry. She said everyone would have one and it would do all your thinking for you. Oh, that Mrs. O'Dell! She somehow knew.

“If their feet aren't in the right place, at least their hearts are "
Christian M. Chensvold
He was a wonderful teacher, I walked into his class with the passion to dance, and he breathed the music into my soul ,he opened my eyes to see and recognise the fluidity in my moves, and they suddenly went from just moves to artistic expression. He was never harsh or critical with any of the students, and with his patience we all eventually became quite good.
For all Teachers, thank you, you are unappreciated by some, under payed, and sometimes abused but you still hang in there, what a glorious profession to be in.

Mr. Newpaul, my drama teacher, wanted his class to learn from the pros and took his class to the set of Jerry Lewis movies. He assigned each of us to someone who had made a name in Hollywood. I had been given Ina Balin as a drama coach and sat in at the making of the Jerry Lewis movie, "The Patsy". It was so cool to see Mr. Newpaul bring us in and Jerry Lewis, working on the camera, would stop the scene and run to Mr. Newpaul and give him a huggy greeting -- like old pals. Then he brought Irene Ryan (Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies) to teach me that even a small person can have a big impact.

My own example would be my grade 4 teacher. He gave me a gift at the end of the school year. It was a book and inside it were the words "For Enthusiasm+" David McCourt.
