I think art is defined by intention.
If something is solely intended to sell a product (ie. a tide commercial), then no.
If something has creative influence, regardless of how that comes through in the final product, then yes.
The Godfather would still be genius if he took a swig of Diet Coke like James Bond did. That's not enough to crumble a movie. It would just knock it down a bit on the art-o-meter. On the flip side, throw a few products by real artists (anyone who gives the label to themselves) in anything, and you'll get a little taste of something artistic in something like a commercial.
This one specifically is an example of the creative team convincing the guys with money to give them a bit more leeway, and not blowing it completely (like whatever that ape playing Phil Collins on a drum kit was trying to promote).

In my opinion, for the most part commercials are not works of art.. To me, art's purpose should not be to benefit yourself, but it should be to benefit/effect other people. Commercials in their nature are designed to make the audience buy a product, which in turn benefits the same company that made the commercial. That being said, I have noticed recently that more and more commercials are attempting to evoke a more emotional response from their audience, and to get them to think. Of course things like Snuggies probably don't fall under this category, but there are more and more commercials out there that almost seem to be serving a higher purpose than just selling a product.

As far as insurance commercials are concerned, I definitely hope so. Since everyone in the U.S. is bombarded by 2-3 insurance commercials per hour, I hope they can get more creative.

My first thought - Levi's O Pioneers! advert.
Unfortunately, not all commercials live up to the standards one might consider to be "art-worthy."
This advert is a more literal interpretation of "commercials as art" -

Personally, I believe it depends on the reaction one gets from watching a certain commercial, or hearing an ad, seeing an ad in a magazine, etc -- whatever medium it is in. Are the Keith Stone ads art? Not to me, maybe to someone else. The first commercial that popped into my head that I would consider art is the google chrome ads.

Well, a commercial is someone's creation. Anything that takes thought and love to create, may it be good or bad, is a work of art. And with that being said...Isn't everything a work of art??? :)

I think not. We are so so so easily trained to be entertained. How can we truly have depth or feel some crossing over with a mere 30 second spot. While it's a cool commercial with a lot of wit, I would suggest it is merely great marketing. If you look at the heart and soul of what classical art involved, this is a nifty idea with couple of hour shoot and 2 very cool looking actors. I find it hard to believe those who produced this spot would see it as making a "lifelong" impact. It's merely a great progressive moment. There must be a better name for great commercials. I have no problem calling it incredibly artistic but art seems overused. The term ART should be reserved for something more transcendent. Just a thought.

I did a commercial that ended up in the MoMA collection and, if they say commercials are art, I'll have to agree with them.

I truly think so. A succession of moments, appealing to ones eye, put together to make you repsond visually and emotionally IS art. Especially the ones that make you laugh so hard you cry....

Yes. Sometimes I wonder if advertising is the most effective form of art. Art is there to move people or effect them in some way, whether it be through laughter or catharsis or tears. Because commercials have a very defined purpose, I feel as if they are forced to move people. Just because they sell us something does not mean they are any less than a Picasso or Mapplethorpe or Warhol. If you think about it, all art sells us something, although perhaps nothing tangible.

Okay, so this commercial is one that I love because of its aesthetic, and I think that it is very effective for people my age. I now only buy Levi's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG8tqEUTlvs

We live in a world of art.... where 'Artful Expression' is represented in all things. If we use Wikipedia's description (since we all know how awesomely accurate it is), we can see this relates directly to a commercial.

We live in a world of art.... where 'Artful Expression' is represented in all things. If we use Wikipedia's description (since we all know how awesomely accurate it is), we can see this relates directly to a commercial.
"Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect... Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery... Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions."
With this in mind, a commercial is very much art. Therefore, the next question to be asked is - Is it good art? And even that is left to the interpreter.
For me.. I see art in everything. If it's man-made, and I can see effort, passion, and devotion put into something, I can deeply appreciate that (despite whether I actually like the end product). The world (and the people in it) is fascinating and amazing... leaving millions of stories to be told. A commercial is just one method of telling that story... very similar to a painting or a song. Unfortunately, commercials have a long way to go before collectively we deem them as 'art'.
But... we're getting there, and I think some commercials hit the mark. Problem is - most companies try to make a commercial to sell a product or service, rather than to tell a story about their company (or product/service). Organizations need to realize that ads can serve as an artful gift to society, and approach them as such. I guarantee the ad campaigns would be more successful, and the commercials would be far more entertaining.

I have made commercials I would consider "commercial art". I have also made commercials I would consider total crap. If you create content that connects with people on an emotional level, it is a form of art.

When I was a kid, I used to want to be an artist. Then, I realized that an artist is just a person expressing and, therefore, we're all artists. Life is the canvas. We, however, expect a certain level of mastery from artists. As for the commercial, surely someone applied their mastery of so many levels of comedic engineering and delivery. So, for the everyday artist: You need only master yourself. But, don't forget to see the art in all things.
