Ambition is a foundational human urge, the thought that there is something in your life that you are moving towards. To some, it means striving for and reaching impossible heights and to others it means to live a carefree life that is completely devoid of struggle. Regardless of the ends, any human that has set a goal has exhibited ambition, and is better for it.

Ambition is hubris. Reaching for things you were not given to begin with. It's quite positive and keeps you moving, when used in moderation.

But when taken to be the main purpose of one's life, it can lead to a lot of dissatisfaction. Just as with any addiction, you'd spend your life chasing an ideal you've set as being unattainable.

Without ambition we are standing still. Ambition is the only thing that can drive us forward.

Ambition might be the opposite of being. If we were being then everything around us would is ok and there would not exist a drive to be better or make better or change or do - there would just be. In the same vain, ambition could be an attempt to relinquish unhappiness, guilt, or anxiety - we push forward, change, improve, come, go, etc. because we are not happy, not fulfilled, not ok. In order to have meaning, have worth and purpose we use ambition as a tool. It's not good or bad, it's more just the reality of human nature. We act in ways that we think will ease our pain and move of closer to pleasure.

Not everyone is ambitious. I like the example used by @fCoffee : wanting food is not ambitious, it is simply a desire. One is called ambitious when they desire something outside the normal realm of desire; when one wants something that requires focus and persistence. It is a normal desire to want to do well at your job, it is even normal to want to be the best in your team/group. To be ambitious is to desire to be the best in your firm, your field, etc. and then going out and doing it. Ah, that's it. Somone is ambitious when they actually go about attaining the things they desire, regardless of the struggle or sacrafice. Ambition is someone's will made manifest in the things they do to achieve what the most desire.

Ambition lets us see what we can become. It pushes us to dream and work hard to achieve those dreams. Ambition does not have to be career-related. It can come in the form of personal development, social interactions, and a deeper understanding of life.

Without any ambition there would not b any progress, after all if the human race never began to strive for anything we would never hav made any discoveries or achieved anything greater than what we started with.

To give meaning. People are sort of like sharks in the sense that if they're not changing and progressing, their purpose dies.

I think ambition is the drive for the next objective. Human nature is to rush from destination to destination, always thinking we'll find fulfillment in the end result of our ambitions. Really, no earthly destination is going to make us feel whole. We have to find enjoyment and happiness in the jouney, savoring each seemingly miniscule moment.

I think ambition is nothing more or less than a description for personal forward momentum. The rate of momentum is always in flux as we look towards goals, re-evaluating objectives and getting to the various points of progress.

Some people set big objectives that require a powerful engine and some can gently approach theirs with pedal power. At some point, the powerful, run out of gas and may have to re-tire. Hopefully the legs are in shape as they come to realize that riding a bike has some real benefits.

AMBITION is loud, but not always right, It's the fire to temper your dreams to. It can easily bite your in the a*s. It can cloud what your really want. All in all, if you fuel it that fire the right way, you keep you mind on what your forming in it, it can be a great ally.... or it can burn your face off.

I find it kinda two-fold. Its doubtelss that so many of the problems happening in our world are from ambitious people, because lets say “form A” of ambition is usually accompanied by greed and selfish desire; but at the same time I feel that another form of ambition, lets say “form B” to do well in school, in work, to want to raise money for your family is more motivated by the opposite, a sense of selflessness.

So in my opinion, i think it really depends on what the motor for your actions - is it self based, or for the interest of striving to excel??

I know there is nothing worse than losing your ambition, I've had the same S****y job for four years and I can't find the drive to go get another one, it's the one major side effect from smoking pot for way to long
