What's your condom?
“The condom is in it’s essence, a compromise: At the moment of greatest potential pleasure, it interferes. It requires that the rush of desire be interrupted, its course modified, its sensation diminished. At the moment of being consumed by the present, a concern with the future intrudes.” —Edward Rothsein
Everyone has it. A fear, a concern, a worry—that condom-like compromise we apply to our lives that keeps us from getting the most pleasure or pursuing our wildest passions. For me, it's an overdeveloped sense of responsibility. Drop everything and take a year off traveling the world? Can't do that. Too many bills to pay. Quit my soul-sucking job and write a book? Who would take care of my family? Curse you, conscience. Sometimes, I want to just throw caution to the wind and go for it. But I also don't want to regret turning my back on the people who depend on me.
