why do people say they could care less when in fact they could not care less?

thsi bugs the crap out of me, someone stops caring. they do not care anymore, the coudl not fathem the idea of caring even a slit bit so the say i coudl care less.

if you coudl care less, then you care soem, which goes against not caring at all.
