I listen to emotional music because it gives me what I love most in life : emotions.
With regards to the down part etc, often life makes things busy and I'm not really even aware of how I "really" feel. Listening to this kind of music, especially live, allows me to tap into how I really feel and let that "come out" and/or "express itself". But that's irrespective of whether I'm "down" or not.
So to answer your question, neither :)

This is very emotional, I think about my late wife when I listen to it.

I came to the conclusion that I was not going to get past my grief for my husband if I kept listening to music that brought him back over and over. Then when I thought I was past it. I was also past the romance bull sh*t. I wanted no part of it. I started listening to talk radio. KFI and got infused with Republican views. Somehow, music would have been better for me. I got caught up in Deadliest Catch and the death of Captain Phil --- which brought back memories. Then some guy was suggesting country and western songs on SP and that turned me off. Ran out of places to turn to shut off my emotions.

Then some fuzzy SPer called me on the phone and played a banjo.
Now I am hooked on banjo.
Sheesh!

Yea, this is question that I feel can go either way for everyone...For instance, my friends despise me for listening to stuff like Deftones, Radiohead, Kid Cudi, Perfect Circle,Straight Line Stitch, hell even Flyleaf when were all hanging or having fun or playing Madden or something. And it doesnt phase my mood in the least. Usually im still the hype-est guy in the room no matter which song is playing...it just puts me in zone of comfort-ability more than anything. I cant explain it. I listen to music like this a majority of the time while doing anything from grocery shopping...working out...breaking up with someone....work promotion celebration...waking up from sex(in a good way lol), it just never changes my mood no matter what is playing...it moreso acts for me like a daily soundtrack lol.

I don't do the latter because I can listen to sad music and not be sad and the first, I don't bother torturing myself.

I believe that it's circular, it could start anywhere and then continue on the same path.

It is not normal to stay in the same state of mind continuously. People will naturally gravitate from sadness to contentment to happiness depending on the situation at hand. If someone is feeling down all of the time, it is more likely because of something more serious in their life and not just because they're listening to sad music.

That depends. Sometimes I just like listening to music, but when a breakup or something tragic happens in my life, it helps me to let out some pain or joyful moments due to the music. Besides music is supposed to help alleviate depression...just saying

There really has been some research on this. A certain song or musical passage can remind us of past happenings in which we felt a certain way, thereby evoking a similar emotion.
