My recent past is ugly enough that doing so is very difficult. I forced a lot of constructive, positive things in place after getting sober. I cut out bad things and people. The new things made my life meaningful. I have no good reason to relive all the mistakes. When I stopped using, really bad things stopped happening and really good things started happening. Life isn't perfect...it's just better--much better.
