The generational idea is interesting. We didn't have comptuers growing up, well, not till Grade 12. Doesn't stop me using one now, as it makes my life better. Thankfully, there don't seem to be THAT many accidents out there involving just people's head's and the cement. Then again, I DO personally know 2 people who have had their lives saved by bike helmets. Life is risky yes, but it doesn't seem like that much of a pain to put on a helmet.

It's a rare day when I DON'T wear mine, the more so since it saved my life once several years ago when I was hit from behind by a car whose driver wasn't paying attention (you can still see the bloodstain inside the helmet)!

Depends. Something like 94% of bicycle death and injuries occur in a collision with a motor vehicle.

In our state, one is required to wear a helmet, if one is under age 16, when riding on the highways. but I gotta wonder why I would possibly approve of my kid riding on the highway to begin with.
and, as far as I can see, those helmets don't seem to provide really adequate protection. while a greater number of cyclists may be killed /without/ a helmet, none of those folks with or without head injuries are walking away unscathed after an encounter with a truck.
The statistics overall can be pretty skewed. Just because someone didn't die specifically from a head injury doesn't mean they didn't die. and whether or not the presence of a helmet would have made any difference, who knows?
my brother was involved in a head on collision on a motorcycle a few years ago. he sustained a pretty serious head injury. the other driver "didn't see" him. he was wearing a helmet. the thing about motorcycle helmets is they block one's peripheral vision and mute sound. NOT a good thing on the highway.
My kids did not wear helmets while riding thier bikes. they wore their helmets when riding motocross. and they never rode on the highway.

Dont let it get the best of you. Its their decision. Most bicycle accidents are not that bad. Motorcycles are bad. I believe you should always have a choice to wear or not to wear. If you stop that, whats going to stop you from airplane, bungee jumping, mountain biking, and eating sushi?

I don't know. They're legally compulsory on Australian roads. I used to wear one. It's annoying for maybe a day, then you stop noticing it.

I guess it's the same reason so many cyclists swerve in front of cars instead of using the damn cycleways.

I bike ride without one...I probably should, but I hate feeling constricted. And, it's not my job to set an example for all the kids out there. If I had kids, then my answer would probably change.

It's generational. There were no bike helmets when I was a kid, so I just don't know about them.
