History has always told us that everyone has their own self-interest. We are born alone, we live alone, we die alone. One can try as hard as they like to hook into other people and we can fool ourselves into thinking that there's something there, something concrete, but there is always a chance, a choice, there's always something that can rip that apart. We are all alone, why shouldn't we look out for ourselves?

I think people are self aware to the point that their vision of what connects everything is blurred. We are mearly distinct from everything, not separate. I believe that if people only worry about themselves AND they are aware of their connections. I believe that things will turn out the for the best when people are in touch with themselves (their feelings) and aware of their own connections with the world (The impact of their actions).

I don't see anything specific in this thread. Whose lead should we be following? Who is the leader? A book full of complaints with no specific suggestions can have some worth, but is only a prelude.

Hinduism is old as dirt and they feel you are the center of your own universe, a philosophy more clearly defined in Buddhism. Your consciousness does define how you see the world around you, and the environments you grown in effect you in very unique ways.

Culture binds us. That's the post-modernist view of connection.
Also - biologically speaking, our brain stem holds the history of our species, our creation from the beginning. That's where we get a lot of those animal instincts and it's my belief that the idea of the "collective unconscious" is there too. This is what connects us not only to each other, but the larger animal kingdom, the earth and all it's creatures.
You can't discover anything about yourself without others, people who look at you and see themselves, and you seeing yourself in other people, and the body communication between people - crazy stuff! It's how we choose our friends, our jobs, our mechanic. Sometimes impressions made early in life, like being brought up in a certian religious context, you can't help but be a person of faith, but there's always some degree of agency otherwise there wouldn't be any former catholic school kids becoming atheists.
I feel like the age of post-modernity is a little more flexible than any other point in time: moral, spiritual, philosophical.

You should read "The Wreck of Western Cultutre", by John Carroll. It addresses humanism and the idea that it does not serve well western culture -- hence the name.

Anyway, post-modernism is a scary prospect. Eventually the lines will be drawn, either the culture will return to the idea of something solid that can be a basis for life, some sort of God; or we will be finally admitted as Gods -- and the latter is a scary thought...

"Truth", "right" and "wrong", IMHO, are very subjective . and if we can't determine those things for "us" as individuals, how do we connect to "something greater"? None of those terms are "one-size fits all". and I think once we determine that "our truth, our right, our wrong" is the /only/ definition, and we expect the rest of the world to comply, it is /then/ that we disconnect from the whole of humanity...and maybe the something greater.

I can see it, people these days are very self absorbed. Its always about someone's personal universe. If someone says something about a general statement (as seen on Pancakesoul!) the person with the opposing view often takes it personal. People are more intertwined with their personal views than putting themselves in the shoes of others as well. Everyone is the star of their own show.
