to me, the doubt is not whether it takes courage to be ruthless in self examination, it does - but not a huge amount...

the doubt is about the degree of courage it takes a soldier to fight -
it seems to me this is very different depending on the person - some people love to fight - love to take risks too - does that make them courageous?
and the type of soldier I saw in Cwmbran joining up to fight in Iraq Afghanistan - they were mad keen to "shoot some ragheads".
I see failures or lack of courage all over the place - but there are exceptions and degrees at every turn.

Evaluating my flaws and working on them has made me essentially a different person than I was 5 years ago. If this quote is true I am a hardened veteran. (my short comings were things like anxiety, overweight, hardcore procrastination, not like drug addictions or anything)

Tastes of hell reside in the dark corners of our own soul -- with deep self-examination revealing that but for a chain of seemingly insignficant happenstance, I could have been Hitler or Attilla or Calligula.
