hahahha lol! I was the same, except I sometimes enjoyed the parties though I never got drunk. I would keep a beer-looking glass of redbull in my hand the whole night and just watch everyone being silly and drunk and having fun.

I'd join in the silliness sometimes which was all the more fun being sober :D

I think /all/ freshmen are "confused" and overwhelmed. College is a different world from high school. and there are indeed some wonderful opportunities there, if you look for them.

Quite a number of freshmen spend thier first semester drinking and partying. why? because they can..this is thier first taste of "freedom' from the restrictions of home, family, and high school. And here's the good thing: you can choose to participate or not. I think first you have to figure out why /you/ are in college in the first place. College, IMHO, is kind of a microcosm of the "real" world, but it's not the "real" world. It is a place for people to "grow" into the real world. There are all kinds of people there of all different stripes. and not everybody shares your sense of values or standards; just like the real world. and very unlike high school.
If you don't like drinking parties, then don't go. If you don't like sororities or fraternities, then don't join. There are a vast number of other organizations on any campus, and, with a little effort on your part, you can find something that suits your needs.
The first few days, maybe even the first semester is always pretty scary and confusing for everybody give it some time.

Briefly, not everyone is obsessed with the things you mention--either alcohol or fraternities/sororities.

If you check around and dig a bit deeper, you'll find plenty of WONDERFUL folks who get by very well without these; and from the sound of your question, it's probably these people with whom you should endeavor to spend your time!
It does, after all, tend to require effort on somebody's part (sometimes YOUR part) both to dig up diamonds and to discover pearls!

Join an organization or something. Make yourself busy, meet others who aren't so "in" to drinking. Pretty soon all those things won't be on your mind anymore.

In confusion, sometimes, we discover not only the solution, but a way to find solutions in the future. Stick to what you believe, and take what you can from the confusion.

Yes, I have been confused in college (and partially through much of my life beforehand), and am thinking that I am becoming less confused.

You're not necessarily missing anything by not drinking alcohol. Most college students feel very free when they leave the nest and can drink (whether or not they're 21). But you can still not drink if you don't want to. A lot of people at my university won't drink due to their religious affiliation (Muslim, Mormon, Bahai, etc). I personally have drank before, but that was before becoming a Bahai, and personally I find it to be much more satisfying to not drink. And I'm sure you can still find people to hang out with (true friends). Perhaps you could also serve as a designated driver and prevent a death if you're with someone who drinks.
And yes, fraternities and sororities can seem like cults. In fact at my university a couple have had to shut down. But not everyone in a frat is a bad person. Most are good, intelligent people who happen to be in that particular organization.

So, I'm also in college, but I'm a starting my sophomore year. I would have to say, that you've just started, give it some time and you'll find your place. If you're not into the partying and drinking crowd, don't worry, that's not the only type of people in college! You'll find your niche and those things won't bother you!

Oh! Greek life is not so bad. Sure, you'll find the stereotypical "superficial cults" ones, but there are also some good ones out there if you look around enough. I know that at my school, a lot of students are involved in Greek Life, but they are also some of the kindest/smartest kids. In fact, I'm even considering recruitment this year, because I loved what I saw. They all supported each other, kept active in the school, and still managed to have fun. And some of those kids that ingest a lot of alcohol, make insanely great grades, still.
I guess that I'm just saying, don't knock it down yet. Give these things a chance.

Sororities and Frats are good for only one purpose…if you plan to work in the corporate world when you graduate you have a much better chance b/c you will be a master a*s kisser. I joined a co-ed business frat in college and it sucked. I only did it to put on my resume which turns out to be pointless.

I would love to see a smarter group of college kids than the current generation. Everybody seems really dumb despite those groovy cool videos saying what an amazing generation has sprung up. I'm not seeing it.

Hey im a freshman too. At the U of Iowa partying is a huge thing. Ive been to a few but i dont like the whole binge drinking thing. Its just straight up unhealthy. I just am trying to meet a variety of people with a variety of personalities and habits and see which i like best. Weird thing is my brother is in a frat even though im just not into it at all. A lot of his buddies are cool guys and say hi to me around campus and stuff. But most are pretty cliquey i agree, im just saying dont hate everyone based on a generality.

Toga! Toga! Toga! No, seriously, there is quite a lot of alcohol abuse in college, and it's sad, but it's pretty similar to the amount of abuse happening in the post-college world, too.
