Kind of torn on this one, as I love Katy Perry's music from a dancing point of view, and love her sense of humour too. But as a mother watching music videos with my kids, I was, like, "Excuse me!" when I saw the video for Teenage Dream, which was promptly turned off. A very interesting discussion with them ensued, though, which I figure is pretty healthy.

Looking back, it was my parents and their peers, which provided the gold standard of behaviour for me, though I didn't always live up to it. Still, the magnetic attraction of that was pretty strong, both in good ways and bad, so I think that as parents, aunts, uncles and adult friends of youth, the best thing we can do is to behave the way we would want them to. And keep on talking. And dancing.

Seriously though, do songs really lead to poor decisions like this? Music affects my mood both positively and negatively but I don't think I can remember a time that music made me make a life altering decision because of it's message. And I don't think Marilyn Manson had sh*t to do with Columbine either. People need to own up for their own actions, what would people have said back then if Klebold and Harris were listening to Beethoven? Manilow? Richard Simmons? Would they have blamed those people or would it have not even been an issue?

I have that Rolling Stones issue where they interviewed her. She's a god-fearing Christian, so I doubt she'd intentionally try to persuade millions of people to commit what the Bible considers a sin if you're unmarried.

I think that it's good to present sex in a way that isn't "Let's get drunk and take pills and f*ck!" Teenage sexuality is healthy after a certain age, and it's nice to hear someone voice the opinion that you don't have to regret sex. People like Ke$ha are the ones we should be worried about.

Thanks for the replies you guys. Like I said, I love Katy Perry. I just wanted everyone's opinion on her influencing peoples' minds. I will probably have sex before marriage, but I'm not going to go around and do it with whoever I feel is attractive. I want my first time to be special and with someone that I care about very much. And many of you are right; there are many promiscuous teenagers out there. Nothing's stopping them from putting out 24/7. But let's say a person who's promised purity hears this song. Maybe they would think, "Oh, no regrets? Hey, I'm gonna go have sex now!"

Funny thing about Perry is she says, (and this is directly from her Rolling Stone article) "Casual sex grosses me out"
So obviously she doesn't even believe in her own lyrics, but she knows that lyrics that are edgy sell. Typical business as usual.

There has been a lot of questionable lyrics in pop and rap music. Although, for the most part I think kids are just singing along not really focusing on the lyrics. It's pop music, it's catchy, it's not meant to be meaningful regardless if she plays two chords on an acoustic guitar while singing. The only thing Katy Perry is influencing on the youth is to continue to listen to pop music. She's not doing anything Briney Spears hasn't done.

The problem isn't necessarily sex before marriage but sex before maturity, before they are old enough to handle any and all potential consequences or complications.
